Turkeygirl
So I made the long hike in to probably our farthest stand, sits alongside an old logging trail where a hemlock swamp and hardwoods meet. I didn't go in the stand though...walked down a little farther and sat in the hemlock overlooking an open area along the creek. Nice spot, didn't see anything. Got a light covering of snow though. As I walk out, I come upon a fresh set of tracks on the trail, right past the stand! They veer off...I sneak out to the field and a doe pops off the edge, tail tucked and making kind of a squeeking/short bleat type sound and trots up 10 yards from me, stops and looks at me, still making the sound then trots up, stops at a corner in the field, sniffs the ground, tail still tucked, still making the sound then trots up a hill in the woods and she goes ba baaaaaa! First time I heard a real life doe bleat... So was this doe in heat? I watched for a buck to come out, didn't see one, but I didn't wait long as I had a long hike back. Think I should hunt the stand up there? I know she could be anywhere in the AM, along with any bucks....but this cold finally got the deer moving again it seems. Andy saw 2 does in a field by themselves then as we walked back in another field, heard a deer snort off the hill.... It's like a 1/4-1/2 mile hike across a field to get to this stand...especially in heavy winter clothes, so I'd probably wear a lighter jacket if I go in there...just wodnering if it's worth a try? Neighbor also called today, told Andy he saw a big buck chasing a doe in a field, right by the one I walked across, 2 days ago around noon! Geesh... Turkeygirl
I don't think it was a fawn...it seemed pretty good size to me...
ruttinbuc
Go with your first instincts, Ruth. It is hard from here to tell you what to do. Sounds like a nice spot. May be just the place in the morning. Bucks like running along the edges of creeks. The doe could have been lost from the herd and was making contact calls. If she was in heat she would more than likely have her tail at half mast and bleating a lot louder.

Randy
I bet she was a hot doe Ruth. I watched two nice bucks tonight with one. I wouldn't have thought there would be any in heat right now but no doubt in my mind this one tonight was. I'd go right back in that area tomorrow, there's bound to be a big buck around her soon! Figure out where the bedding area is and get as close to it as possible without spooking anything. Good Luck!
