So apparently not only did the guy from southern MN kill the world record 8 pt as his third deer of the season. The first two were not tagged or registered. He did not use a bow to kill this deer. He used a rifle. Fines $21000, up to one year in jail, and loss of hunting rights up to three years. Read the full story at pioneerplanet.com (tuesdays edition)

I read the whole story in the Illinois Outdoors news paper, and i am a little confused. In the article i read, it stated the same as above, that he did not tag the first two deer he killed, which were killed with a bow, but that he did in fact tag this buck with his firearm tag.

Hey, don't get me wrong here fellas, im with you all on this in that he should be fined for his wrong doings and fined as hard as possible; nobody likes a poacher... however, why is he being fined for this animal if he tagged it? Is it because he had already been ticketed for his first two incidents and was hunting without a valid license? Was he not suppose to be hunting after he was ticketed? If his licenses and tags were revoked after the first two offenses, how and why did he still have a tag?

I am just a little confused on this whole thing...can someone help fill in the blanks?

Thanks,

Dan

Yeah, in Minnesota you can legally tag only one buck per season. There are party hunting provisions too, but it was clear that they did not apply to this case.

He shot a smaller buck and a doe earlier that he never tagged or registered. Obviously making this big buck an illegal harvest. The DNR got tipped by local hunters who knew of the deer and had been getting trail pics of this ~185'' 8 pointer. The area where this all takes place is very small town enviornment where everybody knows everybody. Some people knew he had already taken a buck and news of this deer spread like wild fire. Upon investigation, he admitted what he did. It was also brought to light that he may have even shot this deer with a firearm, not a bow like he claimed. It was before the firearms season as well so he pretty much just stacked up the charges.

So like I said...What an idiot!!!
