AJ
Re: New Age 209 Primers [ QUOTE ] How do these cool primers fire compared to the hotter ones like Fed. 209A? [/ QUOTE ] Federal's 209A is the hottest 209 primer on the market. The last I heard the hottest to coldest list was like this: Federal 209A Chedditte Remington CCI 209 M Winchester CCI standard Exactly where the new primers fall, I don't know. tedicast
Re: New Age 209 Primers [ QUOTE ] T7.....are these going to be impossible to find like the Remington 209-4 primers where? Maybe until mid-year because so many hunting stores don't re-stock their muzzleloader/blackpowder aisles until then. Rumor mill has-it that Hodgdon will also be packaging these primers in conjunction with their crusty 777 powder. [/ QUOTE ] I split 1000 of the 209-4 Rem primers from the link you posted last month, with my brother Scottyluck. I haven't gotten to try them yet. Will have to try the -4's before I go buy anymore primers.
lil hunter
Re: New Age 209 Primers What I really meant was, does the powder burn slower or anything? I remember when using 777 pellets with 209 primers, I'd hear a pop...BOOM. That changed when I switched to loose powder, but would it start happening again with the cool primers? tedicast
Re: New Age 209 Primers [ QUOTE ] rem 700 50. cal. [/ QUOTE ] I had the exact same prob with my rem, using pellets. I could not get it to fire without it hangingsometimes it was almost instant, other times it took longer, between the primer going off, and the pellets firing. You could hear the lag every time. I ended up getting rid of the Rem, and bought my encore.
lil hunter
Re: New Age 209 Primers For a $200 gun, mine is shooting pretty dang accurate right now. Approx 2" or less groups consistantly at 50 yards. If I was a better shooter, I believe that the gun would be shooting better also, and as I said, I have none of those problems now that I switched to loose powder. lil hunter
Re: New Age 209 Primers I think I'll just stick with the 209A's that I have now. Still have another hundred or two to shoot anyways. Thanks for the info though.

[/ QUOTE ] It seems the hotter burning 209 primers have a tendency to move the powder/pellet charge forward, as it ignites, before the powder/pellet ignites. This supposedly causes a loss of accuracy. Also with 777 the hotter primers cause a heavier crud ring.
Guest deldeer
Re: New Age 209 Primers thanks for clearing that up for me....i will have to keep that in mind, i use the 777.

[/ QUOTE ] Actually, most burn too hot relative to the #11 musket cap which was standard. The guns do go off more reliably than the guns that use the #11 caps. What the manufacturers don't tell you is, they don't necessarily shoot the best groups that way. I prefer musket caps over primers. They ignite reliably and have given me much better accuracy than the primers. I didn't think the ignition source would make that much difference but it does. My T/C Black Diamond and Rem 700 ML shot groups that were about 70% smaller with the identical loads after switching to musket caps. Tripple Seven is harder to ignite and probably needs a 209 primer. But since I don't like the powder anyway, that's not a problem.
JimT
Re: New Age 209 Primers I was thinking about trying the Kleanbore primers in my Black Diamond mz. I use Pyrodex pellets. Think it would be worth it? I can only find them here at Basspro....If this is even them????
