we went through this a few years ago when you thought about coming to wyoming. you'd be making 6 figgures here, schoolteachers are in demand with very good salaries, and my thoughts are the same.

move to alaska. take the job. see how you like it for a year or 2. if you don't like it, you now have experience to apply to the oklahoma highway patrol with. you're a man now, with your own family to take care of. follow your heart and dreams.

The reason I didn't come to Wyoming was cause I got the job I have now making six figures. But I'm never home and miss my kiddo n wife. I'm sending in the info they requested Monday.

Well just researching towns without actually going up there to see for ourselves, we like the areas around anchorage...mainly wasilla, or palmer...possibly Homer. The weather isn't nearly as harsh there as it is up by Fairbanks, but it would still be a huge adjustment. As far as 4-6 months of darkness....it's more like 3 months. For the most part of that 3 months you do get some sunshine, but not for long. It's just something we would have to adjust to.

Now, our first year up there I would be up in one of the places.....sitka, fairbanks ( BRRRRR ), or Kenai. After my year of probation is up, I would be moved to my selected post. Another great thing about the AST is that your not just a highway patrol. The AST handles game violations, drug task force, Forensics, etc. The possibilities of your duties are endless. Jenn was looking up teaching jobs up there.........they are everywhere!

So what your saying is really they are paying you to do 4 jobs.................Hmmmmmmmm sounds like 4 times the headache:hammer1:

I would go and become a state trooper.Get some experiance then if you want to move back to the lower 48 you would have some experiance as a trooper and would help you get another job.Hunt & fish all you can if you move.Ther is a t.v. show all on Alaska highway patrol.I don't know what channel it is on but it is a great show.

No what I'm saying is they have multiple agencies that fall under the same agency. Instead of just the highway patrol, the have their game n fish office, state investigation agency, and some other agencies all fall under the AST. You would work for one single agency but still be labeled a state trooper. No extra headache.

best of luck to you Kyle. i would personally follow my dreams as long as your wife is willing to stand by your side. plus if it is not what you want when you get there you can always move back to the lower 48.

yep. this is the real point here. if you don't try it, you'll spend the next 50 years wondering if you did the right thing.

Application has been submitted and I find out in May when my testing date will be in June....unless I don't get accepted. If I do get accepted I'll be up the in June for a week of testing and interviews, then if accepted passed that point I'll go to the academy August 1st for 18 weeks. Now comes the hard part of waiting.

In the meantime I guess I'll just keep inspecting when the work starts back up after the first of the year.
