Turkeygirl
Late this afternoon around 4pm I put my doe permit to good use on a big fatty doe. To start the story off first though, let me begin at where I was walking up a path along some pines Andy was going to push towards me. Low and behold as I'm walking, I spot a doe bedded in the pines about 40 yards! She was broadside...farily clear lane to shoot through...well some dead branch sprouted a limb at the moment of the shot and my slug was deflected from breaking the limb and I found a line in the ground about 5-10 feet from the deer where the slug hit the ground:bang: Haven't had a good tree limb shot in awhile!:hammer1: Well we push a few other areas...see nothing...We decide to work our way back still hunting...We are way up in what we term the "big woods". I'm working my way towards my one stand I was in this AM..Andy is working his way up and away towards one of our other stands. I pick up 2 sets of tracks together in the middle of the swamp and start to follow them. Well I hear a deer snort and soon see the back end of one disappear, not real quickly, into some brush. I'm crouched, looking when to my right I hear crashing...deer coming! I stand up, I hear them stop. They kind of came from Andy's way. Next thing I know more crashing and out pops a deer. It stops probably about 30-35 yards away, with a few small hemlock branches in the way, but I settle my crosshairs on the shoulder and BOOM! It takes off and as it does, I'm pretty sure I see a hole on it's shoulder. I watch the 2 run and the 1 definitely sounds like it's stumbling and crashing, then I thought I saw it go behind a tree and not come. I start looking and find tracks but no blood. Andy radios me to see if that was my shot because he found fresh footprints from the dumb neighbors...so they must have been in there about the same time and actually they are probably the ones who pushed the deer my way...I love it when that happens:cool2::yes: Anyway there's still a little snow left to follow the tracks..no blood, but instinct and what I saw and heard after the shot made me think it was hit. Well about 30-40 yards from where I shot her at, there lays a big fat doe! About the same time Andy came up...she's one of the biggest does I've tagged...though she wasn't too bad of a drag out...and not gigantic...I shot a way bigegr one long ago, but still a bigegr doe than usual for us! Got her home and got a couple photos...you can see the entry on the shouldersomewhat...it was a mess in the shoulders though...shot hit the aortic artery, exited behind the opposite shoulder, hit lung, slug stopped at the skin..blood got stuck inside for some reason. Adjam5
Congrats Ruth. I had the same thing happen to me when I shot a doe with my smokepole at 20 yards on a drive. The bullet didn't exit and we found no blood. We found the dead doe about 40 yards away. The bullet does not have adequate time to pick up velocity in that short of a distance, but it has enough energy to put a good hole in them and stop 'em. She will be some good eatin' .
