Hey yall well im gonna do some calling at my parents place and was wondering if some raw meat will lure them in to there area. My mother called me last night and said that the family dog was attacked by a group of coyotes. He is a older cocker spaniel and cant run well. He is still alive he is not badly injured as im told, he has some punctures on his back and neck. They have been hearing them usually every night so id like to kill a couple. I just can believe it , im so infuriated by so tonight i think im gonna set up on there deck and wait with the ar15 for them and do some distress calling.

If it smells rotten, likely they will smell it and a chance they may come to check it out. We have had pretty decent results here using deer carcasses and skins. I have in the past tossed out a bag of old meat I found in the freezer when cleaning it out and killed a yote coming in to it.

My neighbor says he lost his dog a couple weeks ago to yotes. Had quite the experience with yotes yesterday morning here right before it was light enough to see real well, plan to post the details in my blog. Last night after dark heard 3 different groups howling.

Can you hunt at night in CT? Can you use a spot light?

Being able to do those will help in the making of good coyotes. Plus, it gets dark early, so eat dinner on the deck with a full mag, good rest and a charged spotlight.

If you bait, you can wait til night to shoot 'em if you can hunt 'em at night. In NYS we can hunt yotes at night with the use of spotlights.

Good Luck.

Yeah, if it's legal hunt at night and use a spotlight. I also unscrew the lens on my spotlights and remove the plastic lens and wrap it in red Saran Wrap. It's not as common as the clear plastic wrap but you shouldn't have much trouble finding it. The red light doesn't spook them at all.

I'd just call too. Those predator calls they sell are cheap and easy to learn how to use.

Found out its not legal at night. ill call saturday morning for them and see what i can do. Went over to my parents monday night to check on him ( Shadow) he had 8 staples on his neck and another gash on his hind leg. Blood on the deck and carpet from him, I really cant wait to get revenge on them a-holes!

gonna go to cabelas next night and get another distress call. Anyone use and have goodluck with the ki-yi call?

Ive thought about trapping them or at least trying it. The problem with the area is there are lots of farms on each side of the town and many deer in the area so it really gets busy with coyotes. I did some reading and the Northeastern Yote are the biggest yotes of North America there a mix between a wolf and yote. There about 30-40 percent bigger than you normal yote. Well just snowed a bunch here wish i didnt have work so i could hunt.

Your best bet will be to put out some baits. Take a 5 gallon pail, put a small chain in the middle like a candle wick, fill it with meat scraps and some water and let it freeze. Remove it from the bucket once it has frozen solid and chain it off to a tree. If they are in the area they will usually find it within a couple days.

Wacoyote knows a lot on yotes, way more than me and he probably kills more in a week than I do in a couple years, and not in any way questioning him here, but maybe western yotes and these eastern yotes might act a little different. They will come to bait during daylight here in this part of the country, if you add a little calling in that is better yet. I have shot yotes in the backyard mid morning in our garbage less than 80 yards away from our house. Have also gotten pics of yotes on deer carcasses or gutpiles in the middle of the day.

Saw a predator bait at gander mountain last year, said it was supposed to be highly effective for hunting yotes, have to admit I was tempted to try it.

Hi Dan.

To start, yer coyotes aren't bigger because they are breeding with wolves (wolves will kill coyotes over territory and for a food source) they are larger than the western coyotes due to food sources in the mid-west and eastern states. Some of the coyotes taken in Illinois have been weighed on a scale not estimated at 50 and 55 pounds, which is a big coyote.

Trapping coyotes ain't like trappin coons, ya really need to know what yer doin or you'll just make them trap wise, they are some smart critters! Using bait and calling is counter productive. If yer gonna call them the whole idea is to appeal to their stomach, meaning you want them hungry, not well fed from a bait pile you put out. Another aspect of calling is during the breeding season and using calls designed for that purpose. My suggestion to you for a serious start would be to buy a good instructional video/dvd on calling coyotes.

A very good video is (Calling Coyotes Like The Pros) and is a 4 hour course (2 dvd set) on all aspects. It only costs $24.95 and is worth every penny for the beginner and experianced coyote hunters. You can purchase it here along with anything else you may need for hunting.

They are a great bunch of people and always willing to help you. I make almost all of my purchases from them.

Just for some backround on me, I'm a state licensed nuisance wildlife control specialist and this is how I make a living.

Good luck and if ya have any other questions send me a pm, I'd be happy to help ya.:gun2:

Guess that remains a controversial topic. The original poster according to several articles may actually be partially correct about wolves and coyotes breeding. Have read that coyotes have and will breed with wolves under rare circumstances and that they will also breed with dogs. Had read some research on this topic concerning the red wolf and read that eastern and western coyotes are not exactly the same genetically. Some states websites also support that there are differences between eastern and western coyotes like this one http://www.wildlife.state.nh.us/Wildlife/Wildlife_profiles/profile_eastern_coyote.htm.

Have seen dogs and a female yote running together here with my own eyes. That was following a short time frame where I killed 6 male yotes off a few acres of ground right here behind our house. Guessing one of those males may have been that females long time mate.
