MARYSVILLE, Ohio, Dec. 5 (UPI) -- An Ohio hunter was hunting for deer when he shot and killed an elk, which are not native to the state, an Ohio wildlife officer says.

State wildlife officer Christopher Rice said Todd Tomlin, an experienced hunter, bagged a bull elk near the Logan-Champaign county line during the state's deer gun season, The Columbus (Ohio) Dispatch reported Saturday.

Tomlin, 45, said he was tracking a trio of does Monday morning, when he noticed something brown with a big set of antlers. He immediately fired on the animal with his 12-gauge shotgun and hit his mark.

"It was trotting, its head up, like it had been spooked," Tomlin said. "I had just a split second to fire."

Rice said the elk, which is estimated to weigh between 350 and 400 pounds after being dressed out, likely escaped from a pen or farm after being transported into the state.

The Dispatch said Tomlin was allowed to keep the animal and is having its body processed for meat.

In case you didn't know, Ohio doesn't have a wild population of elk. :D

I cant believe there isnt more ooopss' like that in WI every year. We have a population of elk in the north, and Im very surprised that at least one isnt shot every year.....

So much for the 'know your target and whats beyond' rule eh.??

I agree I am surprised it doesn't happen more often and it problably does we just don't hear about it

Now how does a person confuse an elk for a deer? Not that I wouldn't have shot it and told the same story myself to cover my butt, but seriously, how could anyone really do that? blinders?- :cool2:

Guessing that kind of oops here would cost ya quite a bit. Our hunting handbook for probably the last 5 years has had pics and description differences between elk and deer. Just don't see how anyone could mistake an elk for a deer.

Here in IL the DNR states there are no bears or mountain lions. However, every year a few are photographed. I asked a DNR officer what would happen if I shot one? The answer was: nothing. They are not protected, there are no laws to enforce so basically you can't poach a bear or mountain lion in IL. I imagine it is the same in WI regrading elk. Talk about getting a trophy elk and not flipping a bill for it!

I read about this a couple days ago on another forum. Most people agreed that it didn't look like an elk and more like maybe a red deer/stag. Here is the picture that was posted:

There was also this link to ohiosportsman.com forums about someone getting something similar (maybe the same one) on a trail cam: http://www.ohiosportsman.com/forum/showthread.php?t=31706

It actually is illegal to shoot elk here in WI. They are listed as protected. Elk were re-introduced back into WI in 1995. They plan on having a (very) minimal elk season in the future.

Pretty much what I'm hearing here too. No laws against it, so he gets extra meat this year I guess.
