sluggunner
I thought it would be interesting to see how people rate the state they live in. Lets do it on a scale of 1 to 10 with 1 being it real BAD and 10 being Great! I live in Wisconsin and I would rate it a 2 at best. It is a tax hole in every way, all of the taxes are very very high from property taxes, to gas taxes to payroll taxes. They are the only state in the Union that is not going to follow the Federal law to allow for the conversion of traditional IRA's to a Roth IRA. The government officials are VERY anti gun, there is a lot of corruption at all levels of government. The job climate is terrible and the jobs that are here pay quite a bit less than similar jobs in neighboring states. The climate stinks as the winters are very long and very cold. So, what does the state have going for it? Well not much except for its natural resources. It is a very pretty place to live with lots of diversity in scenery and wildlife so it is a great place to live if you are into hunting, fishing or the outdoors. (Although this state even charges you for access to state parks and to launch your boat at public boat ramps etc...) As I said it is nothing but tax tax tax, everything and anything possible. But for pure midwest beauty you can't beat Wisconsin. Except for Milwaukee which is nothing but a festering pus-dripping sore on the butt of the planet. Milwaukee is just a mini-me of Detroit, the whole city should be plowed under and left to rot. So now, tell me about your state. stevebeilgard
i'll go with a 10. wyoming has jobs, great hunting & fishing, lots of public land, few restrictions, few taxes and they are low, a good game & fish department, and only 500,000 people. we are the least populated state in the union. everyone has guns and hunts, folks are friendly, the mountains are great, skies are clean and clear... never mind. wyoming sucks. stay where you are. lol

The Kid
umm economically michigan is very bad so i would say a 1 maybe a 2, but my home where i live is a 10, minus my neighbors, hunting is good and we get a lot of snow and i love snow
dbHunterNY
Nice Steve!... NY I'd maybe rate a 7 there seems to be a lot of people hunting the same plot of land, even private land. Here most think "if it's brown it's down" so there's no real game management in place, other than efforts by DEC. Oh yea taxes are high too, but it's home. NS whitetail
I would rate my province ( Nova Scotia ) a 9. Taxes may be high, but we have free health care. It's a beautiful place to live. I live beside the ocean, we have many sandy beaches around us and lots of undisturbed wilderness. I love where I live.... crime is low, I get to make my living out on the Atlantic Ocean, I don't go to bed at night in fear with a loaded firearm beside my bed and as a rule........... most people are friendly and will help one another out. Of course there are always a few bad apples in every bag.
Tony
i would have to say Iowa is probably a 7. the deer hunting is great, but thats it just whitetails. now if we had bear and maybe antelope, then it would probably be a 10.. Tominator
I'd have to say around a 7 or 8. Pretty good hunting and fishing is tough to beat too. Big cities if you want them, lots of country too. Healthcare (especially cancer care) is second to none.
SchuLace
I would put SD at a 8 or 9. Cost of living is very low, unemployment is pretty low, nice small towns all over, not overly populated. There is great hunting and fishing all over. You won't shoot monsters all the time but there are good numbers and many chances to get outdoors. The cold winters suck but I can deal with it. The_Kat
I'd say Oklahoma is a 7. Taxes are average here...highways suck...people are very diverse. We have it all...cities....small towns...country. Not known as a big buck state, but theres lotsa big bucks. Fishing is awesome. Lotsa good schools. Economy hit here, but it's been very mild compared to most states...and cost of living is low.
elkoholic
Well, to start, I hope Steve did not put a hex on Wyoming. Montana has two stories. The eastern part of the state is completely different from what has happened here on the west side. The northwest corner has become a huge mecca for the wealthy with many of the prime waterfront properties and ski areas being bought for astronomical sums causing the property values/taxes to skyrocket. The so called environmentalists have pretty much brought logging to a halt, mining is on the decline and the poor ranchers are starving trying to make a living. Many of the people moving here to get away from it all only brought it with them and have provided a connection for out of the area/state influence on crime and tree hugging. On the other hand it is an outdoor lovers paradise. The county I live in has over one million acres of federal and state land open to hunting, hiking, mountain biking, and just about any outdoor activity you can think of. A lot of lakes and rivers for fishing, boating and just plain enjoying. If the wolf lovers and others of their kind would let the Fish, Wildlife and Parks department do their job our wildlife populations will do just fine. Out of state interests and greed have too much of an influence. All in all, if you ignore the economic climate and the double digit unemployment, Montana is probably an 8 out of 10 based solely on the outdoor recreation opportunities available and the overall small town feel. HUNTINGMAN
KY is a 1,there are no big deer in our state and that pretty much stinks so all you out of state guys ,there is no need to come here hunting. We have elk and bear but they are heavily restricted for hunting. As far as taxes,i guess its ok,but they could always be lower. redkneck
Tough one. Mississippi is like a butt ugly baby, it's just got to be yours to love it. It's a great state, great folks, but we got a couple areas in the state that drag us down in a lot of categories. Deer are everywhere, and have some great quality bucks here as well. Job opportunities at the moment like in most of the country are looking grim as small town manufacturing has dried up and nothing has stepped in to fill the void. I'd give it about a 7 presently. mehunter
Maine would have to be about a -1. No jobs, the air base is closing, it is very anti business and high taxes.....Just to name a few negatives.
Turkeygirl
I thin4 NY state ranks about a 4, for everything, lol Highest taxes....I live in the poorest county....The governor is...well let's not go there..healthcare/health insurance...yikes I suppose the deer hunting isn't too bad, at least in my area...but the DEC needs to do something about management and seasons... I live in the country though, wouldn't live in a city if you paid me.

Strut10
I'd give PA a 3. It gets 1 point for the turkey hunting, 1 point for having the Pittsburgh Penguins and 1 point because we don't have tsunamis or malaria here. Other than that........the weather sucks, the state gov't. sucks, the roads suck, the job environment sucks....... Pennsylvania just sucks.
