The contractor building our log home had family in the sawmill business. He used/is using a stihl 021 saw here for cutting the logs, has a little guide for the saw he used for making straight edge cuts. With his background the fact that he uses stihl saws, kind of reinforces my own experience with stihl saws. Really don't think you would be going wrong buying a stihll.

In a nutshell...you can't go wrong if it's RED. I have a Husqvarna too with a 20" bar. It gets a lot of use and the only problem I've had was a broken pull cord. That's going to happen with a lot of use. One of my best friends has 2 Stihls. It's harder to get cranked when cold than my Husky. He usually has to pull his 4 or 5 times compared to my 3 pulls. Other than that...they are both very reliable.

I once had a poulan that I eventually gave the deep six.

I will never buy another Stihl saw. The first chainsaw I ever bought was a Craftsman with an 18" bar which ran and cut like a champ for over 20 years before it was sold to lighten the load when we relocated. I then bought a Stihl with an 18" bar (I'm a professional?) that I was told would be more powerful than the Craftsman and cut much better. That has not turned out to be the case. Although the engine is slightly larger, with more listed power, it bogs down easily and does not cut near as fast or clean. It is also a pain to get started. The dealer claims that since they are manufactured to meet some sort of emissions standard in California (I still smell like chainsaw exhaust after using it) it affects starting and power output. I think that is just a poor excuse for an inferior product. Not sure which brand I will buy, but I'm thinking a little bit heavier and more power so that it will cut it's way through better.

I used to work as an assmbly lead a the Stihl plant in Va. Beach. I built the 170 and 180 chainsaws. They run like no tomorrow. They are the smaller cheapest models good for smaller jobs around the yard. I can speak from experience that Stihl is a super high quality product and I highly reccomend them. I don't own a chainsaw, but have a trimmer and Shredder/Vac. They start super easy and run great.

I know this is a 11 year old thread but what the heck lol

I have two Stihl chainsaws

MS391 64cc 20" bar 3/8" pitch chain for the bigger stuff

MS230 40cc 16" bar .325 pitch chain for the smaller stuff

Both are awesome saws, haven't had a problem with either of them. Whether it's 100 degrees or -40, they always start, run and work til you turn them off! (or they run out of gas LOL)

Yeah Martin is bored and resurrecting old threads.  Think some of them are posts he sees users online looking at.  lol

Still have the same old stihl 024 with 16 inch bar, saw has to be well over 30 years old.  Not sure what happened with the stihl, cleaned carb, put in fresh gas, and replaced plug and air cleaner and it still won't start, at least not inside of 15-20 yanks.   I guess I need give it another tuneup, it went from being hard to start to won't start, and I am not any longer able to fight with an ornery saw.  Bought an echo cs400 with an 18 inch about 9 years ago, has been great, so much so that I bought an echo string trimmer as well and would not hesitate to buy any other echo products.  At one time I had both the stihl and echo running well and starting easy.  Seems with sharp chains and all else being equal the stihl might have a slight edge with cutting bigger stuff due to the weight of the saw, but the echo probably cuts just as fast and is much easier to tote around.
