Gerhard
Guys, I hear a lot of people saying that they will never be able to afford to hunt here in South Africa... How much $$$ do you think to do a 10 day hunt for 5 different plains game species ???? Please note this is not a marketing scheme ... Its just to give you an idea. Good hunting Edited December 17, 2009 by Gerhard
The_Kat
I'd hope 5000$ or less....I'm sure its more, but thats the reason I'll never do it.
layin on the smackdown
I'd have to say from my door and back it would be at least $8500 including airfare, lodging, meals, etc.

fly
I know a ram hunt in the US for a non-resident will run over 10K easy so I imagine an African safari would be about the same. I'd say an all inclusive hunt (airfare, tags/legal stuff, lodging, meals, ground transportation, guide fees, tips, and then another kicker... the cost of mounting several trophies) would run around 10-12K for 10 days. OUTSIDER
Its my understanding that african hunts run about as much as a respectable elk hunt, but you get to take mutliple animals. The costs are getting there and getting your animals back.
Gerhard
Things to take into consideration for a trip: 1. Airfare return 2. 10 day hunt day fees (this include food, laundry pick up and drop off at airport and more) 3. Trophy fees for every animal killed or wounded 4. Tips 5. Spending money for African Trinkets 6. Trophy handling costs a. do you want to do taxidermy in Africa or in US b. You can only do ship and dip of trophies and have your local taxidermy prepare your mounts as you have money available. c. If you do taxidermy in Africa your size of crate shipped is going to increase and with that the shipping fees. Hope this helps....

Have to wonder about all the other things involved too, like airfare, passport, innoculations, etc. I can see it now "Honey, I'd like to go to Africa to hunt, you can come along too if you want.....we can go back to Hawaii for our 25th...." The_Kat
I can go on an elk hunt in Colorado with everything you just mentioned above for 2000$ or less. If theres somewhere over there that can do that, then please shoot me a pm of how to contact them.
fly
Perhaps the intention is to drum up some business, but I do think it's informative to know the considerations of an African safari. I reviewed the site and my estimate seems a bit low. Airfare (I looked at one airline): 4,000.00 round trip Day fees (10 days): 4,000.00 if going alone Trophy fees: Variable depending on animal type (say 3,000.00 for 4, some cheap some middle range) Taxidermy: Mounting 4 - (guessing 2,000.00) Shipping of trophy and insurance: I don't know say (500.00)? Tips: 250.00 African Trinkets: 250.00 Total: $14,000.00 If one skimps on trinkets and tips, hunts cheaper animals and finds rock bottom airfare: perhaps 10,000.00 could do it. (If I'm wrong please show me where I'm off?) I hunted bear (not successfully) in Idaho (10 days) for about 2000.00 - all inclusive in 08. This spring since I have the gear now and gas prices are about half the trip won't even cost me 1,000.00 for 10 days. Granted, I hunt DIY, no outfitters and I pull my travel trailer from IL. Ohiobucks
I've never had a desire to go to Africa to hunt/bowhunt. I've talked to a few guys that have been there, one guy goes every other year. He brings back a lot of pictures, takes alot of animals, but it really does nothing for me. That's just me though, carry on.
wtnhunt
Seems Leo posted on this topic a few years ago and from what I recall a trip to Africa is probably less expensive than some North American hunts.

I'd say the total is pretty close..I've done some looking prior to this post and I come up with this 2,000 airfare daily fees of 150-400 per day animal fees of 400-1200 per animal taxidermy and shipping back of about 4,000 total
Tony
i voted 5 to 10 grand but it seems to me to do it right and shoot a bunch of animals with bow, 10 to 20 grand. one of the biggest costs is getting all the stuff mounted when your done. i wouldnt really want to go if i was just going to hunt 2 or 3 animals. you have to make it a huge trip of a lifetime and go for broke. im sure it would have fun, but its just not for me. i havent even shot an elk or mule deer yet. ...yet... redkneck
Would love to do it, but still too rich for my blood. I gotta do a lot more trips in this continent before traveling abroad. $14,000 - Reminds me of that old Chris Rock skit on SNL..... "14,000 Good Lawd! How 'bout I send you $250 and you mail me a monkey" I'm also surprised you have any animals left in SA. I thought Texas had just about moved them all over here!!! Dawg
Two reasons I have no desire to hunt Africa: 1. I would have to fly......this home boys feet stay on the ground..........call me chicken if ya want 2. Like John said above, I could go to south or west Texas and hunt just about any African species and do it for a fairly reasonable price. Leo
Seems Leo posted on this topic a few years ago and from what I recall a trip to Africa is probably less expensive than some North American hunts. You can hunt most any North American animal for less than a Safari cost IF you do all or most of it yourself. But if you compare apples to apples, in otherwords, a professionally guided hunt in North America versus a professionally guided hunt in Africa than you absolutely can do the safari trip for less. You pay the same amount for a N.A. trip whether you succeed or not. In africa your trip cost is hinged on what you actually shoot. As far as the Texas option goes, here's an example, at Infinito the trophy fee for an impala is $350, at the 777 ranch in Texas the trophy fee for an impala is $5000! Even after adding up your costs, you literally can go to africa and shoot an impala plus a couple more animals for less than 777s trophy fee alone! It's a greater experience than I can describe. Trip of a lifetime? I hope not. I wanna go back.
