Yep, its him...... late season success

That was what crossed my mind when I saw him coming up the hill. We have had quite the history with this buck going back to the ml'er season where the wife had him at the far end of our field and she had the shakes too bad for a shot. Had also heard from a neighbor that someone killed this deer on a property behind us shortly after the wife had seen him. Guess it was another one we did not know about.

Been a long tough season for sure, not seen near the number of deer we normally see on our property and things up to now had really not turned out the way I would have liked. Put a lot of time in the stand and this was only the 4th buck I have seen here at home all season long, which is really unusual. Last fall on a couple occasions saw 5 different bucks on one day, so to say this year had been poor was an understatement and frustration had long past set in, but stayed persistent.

I did not kill a deer last year despite having plenty of opportunities and that was also weighing on me a bit. Had hopes that passing all those little ones would eventually pay off. I knew we had some pretty decent bucks around this year from all the trail cam pics. I did see this guy on Wednesday afternoon during our late archery, and had him following a young doe and would have had a great shot on him but got busted by a doe behind me when I got my bow off the hanger. Too many eyes as there were at least 9 deer around. We have gotten tons of trail cam pics of this buck, all over our property never at the same time twice never any kind of pattern at all. He had gotten really heavy back in late October early November, but he got pretty run down on the more recent pics we were getting. No doubt he had been fighting a lot and also been busy tending all the local does.

Temps started falling last night and our heater blower motor quit, so did not get much sleep last night over worrying about keeping the kids warm. Was up for good about 3:30, got a fire going in the fireplace and started thinking about where I wanted to hunt. The wind was a 10-15 mph west north west wind, not really the most favorable for where I ended up and I don't usually hunt fields in the mornings but have had it pay off before. Actually thought about going to a beech tree and leaning up against it where I could see to the river and I almost did that, but left the turkey seat behind when I walked out and I am so glad I did.

Got up in the ladder stand/blind well before legal shooting light chambered a round and sat back and did some reflecting on some things. Legal shooting light was around 6:30 and this buck came up the hill along the edge of the brush about 6:40 moving steady. My gun was in the corner up against the rail, I knew immediately when I saw him he was the deer I had been after and I reached down grabbed the gun. He stopped for just a second and looked my way which was just enough time for me to get on him. Found him in the scope and flipped the safety off and squeezed and it was all done in a matter of seconds, he took off hard across the field and made it down around a brush pile out of my view.

Not the tallest or the heaviest mass off all the bucks I have killed, but this is the widest deer I have killed at 19 inches inside and the wife is already talking about how she wants to have him mounted for the walls of our new log home. Maybe we will be in the house by the time I get the deer back from the taxidermist. lol.

Christina was a big help, she actually saw the buck first. Had a pretty good drag getting him where I could get to him with the tractor.

The stand I shot him from in the background just to the left.

AWESOME!! Way to go William! Glad it finally all came together for you! How about a little smile next time ;):p:D

He will look great in your new home!!!

Thanks everyone. Christina took a lot of pics, stopped on the way back at the plot where he was standing when I shot, where she shot this pic. Think this one was the closest to a good smile. I like this pic, but the tongue was out.

Congrats William!! Like the photo in the plot..is that the stand you shot from in the background then?

If that clover is what I think it is..can you pm a pic? Great story too.

Yep Martin, that is the stand I shot him from and yes you should recognize that clover.:) lol. Hamann farms grower mix. Had a half dozen does in that plot Wednesday afternoon when this same buck came in following a little doe back behind me, got busted by another doe when I was getting my bow down.

They seem to be hitting the clover pretty hard right now.
