Turkeygirl
Nice find on that buck skull...should clean up nice. Sorry you didn't have luck with the deer you were tracking...they can be tougher than we think, especially those bucks. He may heal up fine with a scar and a broadhead stuck in his shoulder...which I would guess if it had fallen out, you'd have found at least some blood. Keep your head up, sounds like you did your best. It's hard though, I know as well as a lot of us. What broadheads are you shooting? Thunderheads are one of them any great broadheads out there...they are the only ones I have shot...I shoot 100 gr with my bow at 50 lbs and they do the job well....not always a pass through sometimes just because of the arrow lodging in the opposite shoulder quartering away, but they pop right through the ribs and near shoulder... Good luck and keep your eyes out, you may see him yet!
Slugger
So other than upping the poundage on my bow (60 right now) what will decrease the risk of getting stuck in the shoulder blade? Do you all think a deer can live with 4.5 inches of broadhead and arrow in it? Sorry about not finding your deer, Its a part of hunting that we unfortunatly will endure at some time. If your serious about bone crushing broadheads do a google on single bevel broadheads. http://www.alaskabowhunting.com/Dr.-Ed-Ashby-W26.aspx http://www.alaskabowhunting.com/Maasai-Broadheads-P149C15.aspx all you need to know is here

fly
What broadheads are you shooting?QUOTE] I was using the Rocky Mountain Gator XP. A lot like the 2-blade Rage, but the Gator came out first. I have used them since 2003 and have taken close to a dozen deer with them. However, I've had mixed results as far as penetartion goes. Had poor penetration on a big buck in 06 (I found 3-days later) and went with Muzzy's for a while. I just wasn't as accurate with Muzzy's and actually hit a doe in the shoulder blade once and did not recover her either. So I went back to the XP. I've stuck with them because they really do fly the same as the field tips, but after only 4.5 inches of penetration it's time for a switch, even if it's really more for my confidence than a better broadhead. fly
Went out looking again Saturday before the snow hit. I spent another 4 hours looking (alone) and covered a lot more ground. Came up with a blank. I'll bet that buck lived. Hopefully I'll run into him again before Jan. 17th.

RangerClay
Frank, I just discovered this thread. In fact I was planning on writing a thread this week about the blessings I received this year. Yes God does answer our deer prayers but sometimes we make it difficult ourselves for him to say yes everytime. There is a big difference between prayers answered and us expecting miracles. You made a great effort to recover the deer and you should be commended for that. It was a lot more than some people do. I hope you have good luck with your broadhead search.
