rhine16
When the alarm clock sounded off at 5:15 yesterday, I hit the snooze and rolled back over. I was more than tired after waking up for 11 mornings straight, plus 36 degrees and 8 mph South winds weren't my dream morning anyway. By the grace of God though, I woke up at 6:20 and it dawned on me that I have to get up. You see, we have the wierdest rut down here in MS. Some will tell you the peak rut is in late November, some now, and some will even say January. In my opinion our rut runs from Dec 21- Jan 5 give or take a few days, but I've always had the most success from the 21-23. I've killed 6 bucks in that time... 4 of those on the 22nd(including my first buck 11 years ago and my last rifle buck 4 years ago). That's why I had to get up. So at 6:30, I'm now dressed and in the truck. It's been shooting light for ten minutes, but better late than never. My thermometer says 28 degrees and the wind... well the treetops weren't swaying a bit(and it stayed like that untill noon)... Thanks weather.com!! The morning was rather uneventful. I still hunted my way through the woods, stopping four times to sit for thirty minutes. At 9:40, I'd been a good mile and a half, only to see a flick of a tail and then a couple does. I decided it was time to head back to the truck, but took one last detour to check a field. I crossed into it...nothing. So I start walking across it on a path back to my truck. When I had gotten about 100 yards across it I saw movement at the far. I hit the ground and scoped it in. Good buck.. looks to be at least 16" wide but hardly any mass. I couldn't make up my mind on what to do when another buck jumps the fence and begins feeding in the field... this one has a tall rack and looks heavy. I knocked my safety off, but then he went back into the woods, followed by the other buck. I laid there for a second, devising a plan to kill one. I decided to sprint to the woods and make my way down to the end of the pasture and see if they were tending to the doe out in the adjacent pasture or if i could spot them in the little patch of woods they had gone into. I made it to the fence, readied my gun on the barbwire, and began searching for the bucks. At that time, for reasons unknown, the wide buck came running out and crossed the other pasture in front of me. No longer had he entered the other woods did the heavy buck take off.... That's when I knocked my safety off, put my crosshairs in front of him and pulled the trigger. To say that I was somewhat suprised when he went head over heals at 150 yards is an understatement. He has 11 points (There's a two inch kicker off the back of his right beam) and a 13 1/4" inside spread. Not the biggest in the woods but I'm proud of him. For those of you wondering where my bow is, I put it up for the first time in four years when gun season came in on the 16th. It's been awhile since I killed a better than average buck so I decided to bring out the rifle and attempt it... glad I did as this one is my second best ever. redkneck
Nice Rhine! My buddy killed a 9pt yesterday morning, I should have went but decided to work a couple of days this week. That's the only buck our little club has taken besides the 8pt I killed opening morning. Things are slow down this way big time, but I'd say to me Dec 20th - Jan 10th more or less has been my most productive days. Went yesterday afternoon and saw 2 does, this morning and saw squat. Will be back out there in a little while. Weather is hot and wind is bad, but if you only hunt on the good days down here you won't do much hunting. buckee
Way to go!! That is an awesome buck. It's a shame he got a bit busted up, but that adds a bit of rough character to his antlers too. A great buck.
