hoythunter37
Well I finally got my euro mount finished up last sunday before I left for work. It was the first time I have ever done a euro mount before and let me tell ya. I dont know how anyone else feels about boiling out the skull and everything but man what a pain the the rear. Although I cant complain to much because it came out really good or atleast I think so. The plaque is out of walnut. I just thought I would share it with you all. Hope ya like it. I posted my actual story on another thread. http://www.realtree.com/forums/showthread.php?t=94023 Matt
Turkeygirl
Wow, that turned out great! Nice job! Any problems with having the actual antlers in the boiling water when the skull is in it? I want to know if the boiling water will ruin the antlers or not? Tom2008
Wow, that turned out great! Nice job! Any problems with having the actual antlers in the boiling water when the skull is in it? I want to know if the boiling water will ruin the antlers or not? The antlers should be alright. It is possible to lose a little bit of color. Looks great for your first. Congrats on an awesome looking buck once again too. "Simmering" can be an effective way to clean a skull if done properly. The reason why I said simmering is because boiling can actually hurt the skull. Simmering will just move the water around with out too much heat. No bubbles of hot air. I never had the antlers in the water. I had a buddy that did that and it turned the base of his antlers white. So I put foil on the bases of mine and let the water be right under the antlers about an 1/8 of an inch. Every now and then I would rub some of the simmering water over it inorder to soften the top of the skull.

RTF
Did you degrease it after you boiled it ?
hoythunter37
Did you degrease it after you boiled it ? Well i soaked it in hydrogen proxide for about 8 hours. I didnt want to get the whole skull bright white. I wanted to leave a little bit of color in it. It my opinion I think it looks a little better. But thats just me. Hoyt03
Very nice. To degrease you have to wash it out in dawn soap after boiling and before bleaching. The 40 vol peroxide and basic white mixed into a paste make bleaching very easy and under an hr if you wrap and add heat.
Tom2008
To degrease a skull really well get some ammonia, dawn dish soap, and water and let the skull sit in it for about a week. Works really well.

hoythunter37
nice deer, where did ya find that plack! Thank you. Well I actually made that out of walnut. My brother cut down a walnut at his work and had it cut with the bark still on it.
