Hey ya'll, Huckleberry here wantin' some advice from more experienced callers. Wanting to use mouth calls and new to it. Got a three pack of different calls to see which fits best and have found it's one of the smaller ones. Problem is i can make some sounds pretty good in a few days of practice but no matter what i do, i go to droolin' like a hound dog over a fresh meat bone! How far back on the roof of your mouth? Just behind the teeth or more? Using tounge to hold it up there obviously but how do you get the jaw movement without screwing up the calls position? are the corners of the front supposed to be tucked in behind your teeth? HELP! If you know a good website turn me on!! Thanks!

Hey thanks Kid! Encouragement is good! I didn't figure anyone just stuck one in and starting calling right off the bat. I'm finding that "PLACE" but it is still frustrating right when you get a kee kee run and going and you lose it! Guess all good things come in time. Understanding you can do some pretty good distress calls for coyotes and cats as well! Anyone wanting to chime in and give some pointers, I'm all ears!

It's all in the practice and finding a call that you like and that fits your mouth good. Primos makes a good call that comes to a narrower point at the back, I think they call them an A-frame call. It definitely was a good call that helped me learn to call and get the mechanics down right.

I use the White Lightning call at the site listed above and I absolutely love it. I found out about these guys at the IL Deer and Turkey Classic last year, picked up one of their calls and immediately I was sounding better than I have ever sounded on a mouth call. It takes a long time and a lot of time with the call in your mouth. One thing that might help is just take the call and put it in your mouth while you're sitting down in the evening or something and just have it there and put it up in the roof of your mouth and hold it there a while and just get used to the feel of the call in your mouth. That helped me out a lot.

Yeah, just give it some time. The 'Youth' frame calls sound like what's comfortable for you. Just remember...calls are half-moon shaped and the rounded side goes towards the throat, square end towards the teeth, but keep back from the teeth a bit. Good tip is everyone has a gag reflex...slide your call back to about where yours starts, (you'll know before you get there! LOL!), and come forward til it's comfortable. Middle of your tongue should hold call in place to roof of mouth even when jaw action for yelping. You'll get it!! And the best starter calls are always plain old single or double reeds; way easier to learn and blow.
