Ravin R10 man
Saturday Jan. 2nd was a successful bow hunt for me with one day left of our WI. late archery season. With a below zero temp of -5 and dropping, Andy and I went out to my stand to sit the last two hours this afternoon. He was in a stand just behind mine, and a bit higher than I was, pretty much over-the-shoulder.. We were layered well...moisture wicking thermal long johns, jeans, winter (logging) cutting pants, insulated snow camo bibs, down vest, insulated flannel shirt, insulated snow camo jacket, snow camo hood and snow camo mitts that allow you to expose your fingers. Had hot hands stuck into both mitts. We climbed into the stands and settled in at 3pm, at 3:30 two does and a fawn came in upwind stomped and blew, and ran off! No idea what they saw??! At 4:15 two fawns and a different doe came in and fed..the doe may have caught a slight sound or winded us (wind may have swirled)..and moved on back away and stomped. I see this deer coming into the balsam, just then the doe runs off and the fawns followed...Andy started moving to reposition himself,( we'd been sitting still for over an hour).... I motioned with my hand by pointing to the left. Just then the deer started to walk into our setup then stops again!....Now I see it's a pretty good buck!..:jaw:.... I clip my release and bring my Mathews Switchback XT bow up onto my knee....Just then.. two fawns come running in and a narrow 8pt from another direction goes right over to the 10 pt and they posture, lay ears back and smashed antlers, which sent the narrow 8 pt flying out of there! The 10 turns at 25 yards and comes right at us...(Andy is behind me going.."It's Low & Wide!..It's Low & Wide"!!) I turn and say.."Andy!.....SHUT UP!":taped:...LOL So here he comes...29 yards...over one windfall, it's DEAD QUIET and I know I must draw as he walks or he'll bust me with the slightest sound...he has one more windfall to come over and a fawn is right on my side, so I figure when he steps across it, the fawn will take off making more noise...at 15 yards he lifts his foot and I draw... cant believe I made it to full draw as he gets across, turns and stops slightly quartering away at 10 yards! PERFECT!... I got my anchor..got my peep...got my pin......come up from under him with my pin..recheck peep..pick a spot...THWACK!!!! He leaps into the air, cleared the windfall and takes off the way he came in...see him out at 45 yards going full bore!... then a few seconds go by and CRASH! I turned.. we fist bump, and I remember telling Andy "I SMOKED EM"!! He says.. "it sounded like a good hit,.... I think I herd him go down!! ....Man!... that was just like watching T.V."!! We get down, find good blood first jump, no arrow..thought I should of had a pass thru, but find blood trail and follow up. We get out 70 yards and not much blood, (figure arrow is in deer, lungs are filling up, or maybe I hit farther back?)...I say lets back off and come back in an hour or so...we do, and only went another 30 yards and he was piled up! We find what looks like Mt. Lion tracks circling the buck...think we got there just in time...put game cam on gut pile before we left..we will see... so here are a few pics.. click to enlarge 10 pt Snow Camo boogie man "Low & Wide" Edited January 3, 2010 by Mathews XT Man

buckee
Way to go Martin. Awesome 10 pointer man. I gotta get me some good snow camo like that some day. It's rare to get snow here during our hunting season, but when it does happen, it's good to be prepared. That's a great looking buck buddy. Slash
I guess I wasn't thinking of how good the deer could hear....only how bad Martin can hear. And with his old age I'm not sure how good his eye sight is these days. LOL j/k It's obviously pretty good since he dropped this freak nasty 10-pointer!
