How is this legal? Legal Discrimination?

I'm not sure about other states or indian nations, but the creek nation here in Oklahoma has stopped selling cigarettes to non-indians. Mind you they are not on an indian reservation, and are sitting within the city limits of many towns throughout our state. They are allowed to sell these cigarettes tax free.

Now you tell me how is it fair or even legal for a business to discriminate who can come in and out of their stores, and who they can sell to? If they don't want to sell to non-indians, then they should move their shops out of the towns they are in, and onto private indian lands. It shocks me that this is allowed in our state.....legal discrimination. Add that to the long list of indian affairs and rights they are awarded for things that happened over 100 years ago.

I could understand all of this if it was rules made on a reservation....but these shops are located in non-reservation property and towns.

It comes down to tax dollars. Just like being able to get cigs in the mail...No more! Cigarette taxes pay for a lot of stuff. With more peole kicking the habit they lose that money and look for ways to recover it....check out the size of snoke and chew displays in these convenience stores. They take up a lot of room....

Ya those signs stand for the right to refuse service to unruly customers, customers that are shirtless, etc. I'd love to see what happened if a quick stop ran by a white or black man said NO INDIANS on it.

I agree...It seems that as long as its a 'minority' group that is doing the discriminating its ok......:taped:

Tell me about it Kyle. That’s just like this gambling thing! Once it passed the casino's blew up!

East of Claremore Oklahoma was Will Rogers Downs (horse track). The guy that owned it was Caucasian. He was only allowed to race a couple of times a year due to gambling restrictions. His only income for the track was for trainers and boarding horses (equipment use, etc). It was quite simply going under.

He ended up putting in gaming machines that are suppose to pay out in Phone Cards (its an old racket that ran through Oklahoma and no telling how many other states). You could rebate the phone cards for cash. The State banned them and eventually he started sinking.

Oklahoma Cherokee Nation stepped in and bought him out. In no time they had a "Mini-Casino" and regular races in the same track. It is now booming and perfectly legal.

It really irks me...

simple rule, kyle. you can only be discriminated against by a white person. anyone else, it's fine. now, if a white person is discriminated against by anyone non white, that is just payback and a part of their anger. you'll just have to get used to it.

dividing america and americans is what this administration is all about. how's hope & change working for you???

I know its oklahoma but wont that hurt their business tremendously only selling to indians?

I'm pretty sure this wasn't the creek nations idea.

If I had to wager a guess, I'd say that the Oklahoma government figured out that they were losing money on one of the biggest tax "cash crops" out there. Therefore, they made some type of deal with the creek nation to stop selling to non-native americans.

I am torn, being mostly Indian than anything else---Cherokee brand more than anything.

What I see from my fellow Indian brothers is both saddening and sickening at the same time.

In Cherokee, NC they were allowed to build a casino under the lie that it would increase the affluance of the general population, it hasn't. If anything, I see more depravity in daily life than before.

Unfortunately, what used to be a proud group of Indian people has turned into little more than a welfare state it seems and that seems to be consistent across all bands throughout the U.S.

Some of the most poverty striken places are reservations. Education is almost non-existent. They seem to be content to battle the non-Indian population politically and elect those that will 'give' them more. I wish it were different.

As to the cigarette issue, I am sure it has some sort of political reasons behind it. Perhaps the Indians are being given special tax breaks for their people and they want to keep it among their people?

Just what I said. I used to work with guys that would get boxes of cigarettes from various Indian nations. States outlawed the practice because they were losing money in taxes. Just like driving down to a southern state and getting cartons of cigarettes and bringing them back to sell. If you get caught it is a big fine as you did not pay the applicable tax to the state. It is about the money just like everything else.

Kyle I'am not sure about there but I know the stores and land that the Chickasaws have that set inside the city limits are anxied (sp?) out of the city limits and they set on tribal property. Maybe that is thier loop hole?

I agree, it's extremely unlikely the Creek Nation is to blame here. They are "taking a hit" for limiting sales.
