layin on the smackdown
so, there i was visiting family in southern IL on thursday, and i noticed some type of rash on my left shoulder and neck...kinda thought i may have been bit by a few spiders or maybe they layed a nest in my hunting clothes, so i kind of ignored it...then it turned into a very irritating feeling, and pain all around the rashed areas...so i got some cortezone and kept applying it a few times daily...sunday i woke up and felt extremely stuffy and my left ear and throat hurt a little - but being a man, i just toughed it out and dealt with it...on the drive home, early evening, my head started pounding and my ear started to really bother me, so i stopped and bought some nasal decongestant in hopes of a little relief...wrong...made it home about 1 hour later and it all went way down hill from there. Tried tylenol PM to help me sleep, but i had the chills, fever, aches - the whole nine yards....went to the doc today, sat in the waiting room for 1 1/2 hours and finally got in...they diagnosed me with Shingles, severe inner ear infection and strep throat...i havent been sick like this in years, and man does it suck...off from work til at least friday... i wouldn't wish this on anyone - so all you take care of yourself and take all precautions necessary to stay healthy. :crutch::angry: dan

Glad I had the pox as a kid, hopefully won't have to deal with what you got. Get some rest bud.

Unfortunately, shingles are the chicken pox virus that you had as a kid and lays dormant in your nerve roots until it rears up to get you again later on, in a different, nasty way. Laying on the Smackdown..... hope you're feeling better soon.

wtnhunt
Sounds like you maybe had a weakened immune system from the other stuff going on Dan and it all seemed to hit at once. Shingles from what I understand is caused by the same virus as chicken pox and most often comes on in people whose immune system is already weak. May try and take some extra vitamin c and get your immune system stronger. Hope you get better soon.

You can't take the chance to not investigate Lyme and it's co-infections. Trust me..........I am living with the crap right now. Lyme is the "great deceiver" and is usually misdiagnosed as something else or as nothing. Please read this link........ http://www.lymepa.org/Basics2007v1.2landscape.pdf The simple blood test that your average gen prac tests you with will not be accurate. You need to see someone who knows how to test & treat Lyme!!!

ruttinbuc
Wow Dan! I don't know how I missed this thread, but that does not sound like any fun. Can't imagine a strep throat and an earache together. Sucks being sick for sure. I am feeling a bit better, but not by much. Guess we have to rough it out. Get Well, bud! layin on the smackdown
Thanks everyone for the well wishes...very appreciated. I think what caused this hatrick of illnesses to unleash on me all at the same time was my "manliness" ability to ignore the initial rash of shingles. I think my immune sytsem became comprimised while trying to fight off the effects from shingles, which opened the door for other unwelcomed visitors to breach my defense line...It probably also didn't help that i was surrounded by 5 kids who were coughing on me and throwing up on me over the holiday weekend...Hopefully this is it for a long long time. They put me on amoxicillin for the strep and ear infection, and then put me on neurontin for the shingles, along with a topical ointment. Let me tell you what, this neurontin stuff makes me feel like crap - drowsey, dizzy, and blurry vision. The bad thing about it is that today is day three and i have to take that crap 3 times daily for the next 7 days. The good thing is that i am feeling alot better (other than the side affects from neurontin). So, once again, i just wanted to thank everyone for the well wishes. dan
