i got the last paper signed today,,,,i now have lifetime hunting rights to 4oo+ acres( i still got to talk to the farmer with an adjoining 350+ acres!) now where do i start? i want a couple food plots, i want a couple mineral licks and i want to set up a winter feeding trough(the plan is to cut 4 - 50 gallon drums in half and assemble them in a way that works) where do i start with the food plots? i got 3 spots that are about 3/4 of an acre that are mostly clear so i'll clear them out, till , seed, water, etc..... but here is my dilemma-------- the main concentration of deer are at the east end and i want to bring some to the west end and the south end too!!!!!! thanx in advance for any advice!!!! confused.gif

Re: i got it..now what?

VT covered the soil test part already. Get that done soon because you will probably need to lime those food plots according to the instructions from your soil test. Lime takes a while to get absorbed into the soil so get it done early. About 6 months before your fall planting if you can.

You might try some of dogdocs mineral lick recipe too. With 400 acres I'd go with about 300 lb's of that mix in 3 different spots. Put them in different parts of your property just about evenly spaced in distance from one to the other.

I wouldn't worry about where the deer are right now either. Like VT said they'll find their way to those plots.

First, you invite me, wtnhnt Oneida Man, and dogdoc down, and we will personally look over your land and give you food plot help, for the mere price of being able to hunt the land too. What a bargain.

Seriously, like Josh said, get some soil samples and might as well go ahead and get some lime and throw it down now. (if you have acidic soil). It's not too late to plant anything, but I'd hold off on planting most stuff right now because of frost.

Re: i got it..now what?

wow---lifetime hunting rights--what a deal. I'd go ahead and get a spring plot planted as soon as your chance of a freeze is gone.

Split the area that you want to plant into food plots as 50% annual plots and 50% perennial plots. Start spraying the area to be perennial plots (clover, trefoil, chicory) with roundup in mid spring and continue spraying the area until late summer ro kill all existing vegetation and new vegetation that pops up from last years dormant seeds. This will give you a nice clean plot for your perennial planting. Like others said Hamann Farms makes a great fall blend that I highly recommend or you can mix your own--my 3 favorite perennials include clover, trefoil, and chicory.

For your spring annual plots I would recommend planting a mixture of iron and clay cowpeas and sorghum--the sorghum gives the cowpeas something to climb and will increase their production.

let me know if you have any more questions!
