Well, that was fun.......

For the first time in a long time I’m glad to be at work..

Last week was fine right up until Wednesday night. The wife and I went and had dinner (to get some Daddy and Mommy time) and then picked up our two monsters. We got home about 9:00 and started to run a bath for the girls. The well was off. It occasionally loses its prime so I went to prime the well. Nothing.... It wouldn’t build up. I finally closed the inline ball valve and it built up. Good and bad, the well is ok but I’ve got a busted line somewhere.

Finally about Midnight I found the busted line. It was 12" - 18" under a concrete slab in a storage/ apartment building. To further complicate things we also had sub-zero temps blowing in and the news had been warning us for several days. Yeah Me!

My wife had to have her Wisdom teeth cut out on Thursday so I sent her to bed at about 11:00 and dawn my hunting gear. I had to pull part of the wall free from the building and then use a pick axe, a shovel, and a small hand spade to dig out the line. Finally at roughly 2:45am, and a 30" x 24" hole under the slab, I found the line and was able to clear it enough to get a hacksaw to it. I got it all cut and ready to cap but we didn’t have a 3/4" cap anywhere. I fell into bed at 3:00 after emailing my boss and letting him know I would not be in on Thursday.

Up at 8:00am. My wife had already ran to town and bought a cap (amazing how a $.49 part can save everything). I glued it on in 9f degree weather. I had to leave it several hours to setup so I ended up driving across town to the in-laws to shower so I could take my wife to her appointment. We had sleet and snow the night before (which I worked in) so the roads were really slick. I sat for about 1 1/2 hours until they told me she was ready. They cut out all 4 teeth, she is 31 and you’re supposed to have it done when you’re 17, and there was blood everywhere.... It wasn’t pretty. We made it about 4 miles outside of town and I had to stop for her to throw up blood and gauze.

We finally made it home and luckily the in-laws were at our house so I was able to get the water back on and remotely cover the hole.

The next few days are a blur. My wife's face is seriously bruised and she couldn’t eat much more than vanilla shakes. We tried Strawberry once and she was sick and throwing up all night from the pain meds and the strawberry on her stomach. She has hurt on a major scale all weekend and I’ve had to help her with basically everything. Since Thursday I have made over 2 gallons of shakes, washed every drop of laundry, cleaned house WAY too many times, nursed my poor wife, cooked 3+ meals a day, and kept up with the kids. I literally have not sat down for more than 45 minutes to an hour since Wednesday.

I’m exhausted, everything hurts, and I want to go back to bed..... :D

Yup...I'd say you have been quite busy.

Hope your wife gets to feeling better soon.

What steps did you take to make sure this won't happen again with the well?

We have a fairly shallow frost line. Any pipes or anything only need to be 24" or greater to meet code (even though my area has no code of any type). I capped the pipe off below 24". This spring Im digging it back up, re-running the pipe, and wrapping it with pipe insulated wrap before covering it. Im also going to put either screenings or sand around it. The builder didnt put any type of expanding material around the pipe so im afraid I would have had a bust at some point anyway.

Im also going to buy a Hotel Heat and Air unit for the apartment so I can keep it heated and cooled fairly cheap. That in itself will make a huge difference....

The one thing I would really like to do is put a ball valve to that apartment in my well house. I could then just shut the water off all together and wouldnt have any concerns during the winter.

Ditto again on the WOWZERS! I hope your wife gets to feeling better soon, be sure and guard against dry sockets. I know the gauze pack is nasty but it beats the dry sockets. I had all 4 of mine cut out while in the Corps and the "Dentist' neglected to give me a no duty chit and I had to fly that afternoon. Not fun. Prayers on the way.

The wife is still hurting badly. She went yesterday and they packed meds in her gums. One fell out and she swallowed it. The other is really helping. They told her she should be able to open her mouth by Thursday... eek.

She has to go to work tomorrow and I dont know how she is going to do it. If she misses her Meds she starts to hurt bad. She has another appointment with the dentist on Thursday and they are going to repack her gums. Hopefully she can hang in there until then!

Hope you wife is feeling better. Sounds like you've had your hands full and then some. Kudos to you though, you're a good husband and father! Maybe a reward to Cabela's, Bass Pro or Gander would be in order for you!

Two new duck calls..... Last night.. :D Thank You for the suggestion. :p

Yes sir..those dry sockets are nasty, especially when it's cold outside.

A few years back, I had 2 teeth pulled, the day before I left for a hunting trip to Osoyoos, BC. Well, needless to say, I discarded the dentists advice, and ended up in pain the whole trip. Everytime I breathed in that cold air it was like someone jabbing me in the dry sockets with a pitchfork.

OUCH !! is an understatement
