TN Bucknasty
Does anyone out there hunt any public land in the Midwest? A friend and I were thinking very seriously of taking a trip up to Kansas for a hunt next year. I live in West Tennessee where hunting pressure is intense and where big deer are scarce. How does the public land out there compare with hunting on private land in the South? I'm a bit gun shy of public land because it is such a nightmare to hunt it here in TN. fly
Not sure about Kansas, but in IL. you'll find the same problems as in TN. I will say the Shawnee Forest is pretty good prior to the gun seasons. I've heard southern Iowa is a good place for public hunting as well? Yeah, some of the guys from the shop have been to IL and said it was a war zone. Iowa sounds interesting.
licking_co_hunter
ohio has some good public land, but just like everywhere else could be surrounded by orange when it gets daylight.
ruttinbuc
Kansas has a lot of walk on land that is from fair to very good hunting. They used put out a booklet that shows every piece of land in their program and all of the many pieces of federal land you can hunt. The problem in most places out there is a place to stay. Something to really look into when you find a spot. With a little research you can diy. at a good price. A lot of information to start with... http://kdwp.state.ks.us/news/KDWP-Info/Locations/Hunting-Fishing-Maps-by-County/2009-Fall-Hunting-Atlas

buckandbull
Kansas does still have the hunting atlas that shows you all the walk in properties. We were just out there for pheasants, but we saw some great bucks on walk in property. We were there during deer rifle season and we didn't see a lot of pressure especially if you are willing to get out of the truck and get down into some of the creek beds.
