Throw N Grow and Secret Spot

Recommended Posts

I have planted throw and grow the last two years. It came up great with very little work. The brassicas in the blend were mutilated by the deer. The ryegrass got very little attention from the deer. Compared to my other plots of wheat and rye (which are have been eaten to bare ground) the the ryegrass in the throw and grow is still about 6" tall and getting very little browsing. I don't think I will be planting it again next year. I believe I will mix my own with rye and brassicas.

Was there any problem wih getting it to grow as far as deer eating it faster than it would grow. I had heard that as soon as it started to sprout deer would be eating on it.

Not sure about WV but here in Wisconsin, the deer start eating gradually after a couple of killing frosts. After some hard frosts and the dropping of the fall leaves, they start to hammer it. How hard it gets hit depends on your deer numbers and amount of available food sources.

I tried secret spot last year and did not have good luck with it. Cleared the brush and leaves. I even took a grub hoe and dug out all the roots from the shrubs and whips. Only about 10% of the seeds actually germinated. I never draw a conclusion on one attempt, especially with food plotting, but this year I am going to clear a whole acre an plow it up and plant a different mix. As far as what is in it- Every seed blend has a breakdown of exactly whats in it, from the different seeds to the inert matter to weed seeds and it is all in percentages.
