"He didn't have to be"

Have not been on here much this past week, been dealing with a tough loss to our family. My step father passed away last Friday, the funeral was Tuesday and I have been in the middle of dealing with trying to help my mother through all of this. Needless to say, been kind of out of touch with some things outside of family lately.

Kind of tough to find the right words here, but I just wanted to post a little something as a tribute to one of the best teachers, friends, grandfathers there could possibly ever have been.

My father died when I was only 2 years old in an accident in his jeep and my step father married my mother when I was 6 years old and been the only dad I ever got to know. We had plenty of disagreements and he made sure I learned from what I did wrong, and on the rare occasion when he might have not been right, well I learned from that too. Of course he did not have to take on the responsibility and the song from Brad Paisley "He didn't have to be" seems kind of fitting in all this because he really did not have to take on the repsonsibility of raising me, but he did and he was proud and I think he did a pretty good job of teaching me over the years and I only hope I am able to raise my kids as well as he raised me.

My kids adored their grandpa and telling them he was gone was one of the toughest things I have had to do to date in my 40 years of life. I guess in a sense we were lucky though as we did get this time with him, he had brain surgery back in 2005 and he was not given great chances at coming out of that surgery without complications or even making it. Then he had more problems with his heart and there were a lot of ups and downs with his health over the past few years.

He did 2 tours in Vietnam and although he never was really big into hunting he knew guns and knew them well. He pretty well loved anything to do with the outdoors, I feel really blessed to have had him take on the responsibility of raising me as his own and him loving my children too. I sure do miss you dad.

Very touching William. Prayers and condolences to your family. I've always said that grandparents are a gift. It's a great thing to have a great Dad, but it just gets better as he becomes a grandfather. Was tough telling my girls when my father in law passed, they loved him dearly. Hang in there bud.
