Nothing like spending more $ than you want

Certain areas in jobs, such as nursing, like to overprice us professionals.

I have a PDA I had to get at school and had to pay for have a nursing thing on it, which was very handy. Well it expired and to renew it is another $100...I mean that sure is alot for some application on a PDA but I will say in school and at camp, it was very helpful, has a drug guide, Taber's Medical dictionary, lab tests, etc..etc..Just a pain to spend that $ but guess that's what some of my custodial paycheck will go for.

Anyone else think certain professional needs are priced more than they need to be?

I'm a cop and the uniform I wear is right at $98. Now when you need at least 3 pants and 6 shirts it gets pricey. We need 3 short sleeve and 3 long sleeve. Throw in a pair of good boots that dont hurt your feet and there is another $150. There's $550 in just the uniform.

Oh we do get a uniform allowance of $7 whole dollars a month:hammer1:

which equals 6yrs to get that money for uniforms.

if I want to renew all my journeyman licences I'm looking at about $600 annualy. Just about every town within the county has their own set of codes, criteria, and FEES even though we have set state codes by trade.

When you let them slide for a few years they backcharge you for the licences from your expiration date upon renewal and throw some late fees on top of that even if you didn't work in that town durring that timeframe.

It can get pretty pricey to legally work. Fortunately my past employer has footed the bill to keep me current and payed the arrears even though I no longer work there.

He's probably doing one of these right about now:bang:

Buying your own tools to use at work. Cordless drill, sawzall, circular saw, cordless impact and a whole bag full of hand tools adds up too. My last job didnt provide tools for us to use except the really expensive things so I was glad I had most of that stuff already...but that stuff aint cheap either.

Just a good pair of work boots is pushing a hundred bucks or more too...plus some winter work clothes....all takes a good bite out of the paychecks lol

Outrageous what you guys are paying....I'm figuring one uniform will be around $20 for me...then a really good pair of shoes $50-$100...

I did decide to renew my nursing application for the PDA...it's so useful...but I'd rather spend a $100 on hunting, lol

It's a small price to pay for the overall money you'll be making when you get a job. I pay 435 dollars a year for my union dues. Every single license I have costs me every three years to renew. Next year if I'm still inspecting ( hopefully not ) I will have to send the Fed. Gov. about 1200 dollars. It's a lot of money, but they pay me alot of money too....so it's just part of it. I'd rather give em that and make what I make then not have to pay and have a mediocre job.

BTW Ultra....7$ allowance???? Thats BY FAR the lowest I have ever heard! They surely don't expect ya to be starched and drycleaned everyday I hope! We had a 45$ allowance and uniforms were FREE! The 45$ was for drycleaning and any replacements.

Dude!!! Trade ya............

$74/month = $888/year............all for an organization to which I am ashamed to admit I have ties.

Do ya have a seperate set of union dues paid out of each check? mines usually 45-55 a week when I'm working....and thats on top of dues. I'm proud to be in my union though.

Nope. $74 yanked from the first check of the month.

I'm ashamed to be a part of any group that goes so far down on the democrat party. It disgusts me to know I am forced to contribute money that will be used to re-elect folks I consider to be enemies of the nation.

Sorry about the hi-jack, Ruth. :o

All of my uniform apparel is provided free of charge. We also get a uniform allowance on top of that. Guess were lucky.

Since i went to plain clothes, obviously they were not provided but my allowance went way up.

Sad but true. I think it is repulsive for people to get paid for years put in and not the quality of their output. Robs the people that are actually working hard and rewards those that do just enough not to get fired. Thats your government at work for your benefit.

Yea I have the skyscape products on my old Palm. Drug database, medical dictionary, and a few others. I didn't have to pay for it since it was included in a research study that had grant money tied to it. I haven't updated it for a couple years now. Sure drugs change, but it serves my need for now.

There was a motion in our school that would REQUIRE students to purchase such a device and associated applications. I'm currently writing a policy that will put that motion to rest. The biggest problem is that currently most devices include phones and/or cameras. Having phones and cameras in the clinical setting is just asking for problems. "Oh hold on Mr. Smith, I'll get your pain medication right after I answer this text message."

You wouldn't think it would happen, but it has. Taking photos of patients has also created problems.

I'm sure my wife is glad she went through the program at your school while these devices are not required. She bought the pocket-sized reference guides during school and might have used them then, but hasn't touched them since. She would probably think an electronic device would be a waste of her money.
