Guest andymansavage
I live in Utah and have only bass fished for a few years. I mostly fish in the springtime from a boat in some private lakes in the desert. We have great success with spinnerbaits and Texas rigged worms, and catch 30-40 bass per day each, most in the 2-4 pound range. I live five minutes from Utah lake and want to learn how to fish it for bass, as it has a healthy largemouth population. The lake is BIG, covering thousands of acres. It is very shallow, 10 feet at the deepest, and murky. It has a muddy bottom, with little structure and the shoreline is predominantly reeds. The daytime air temps right now range from 30-45 degrees. How should I fish right now, and what should I use?? Thanks for any tips Andy My friend's private lakes(yes, I only wear those glasses fishing)
BLH
Re: bassmasters, help me out! I would throw spinnerbaits, soft plastics, or crankbaits (to cover a lot of water in order to find fish) at any cover or main points. Being winter time, I would concentrate on deep points with deep running crankbaits. Winter bass love these ambush points for shad. Try it and see how it goes. Guest gfourhunter
Re: bassmasters, help me out! i agree with blh, but rember to SLOW down and fish the west side of the lake, it worms up first in cold weather.
fisherguy
Re: bassmasters, help me out! If there isn't much shoreline structure look on a depth map, or get out in the boat and look for mid-lake reefs, humps, or weed beds. I do well on that kind of structure for all types of fish since those areas are often overlooked on big flat bottomed lakes.
VABuckSlayer
Re: bassmasters, help me out! I would start out by throwing a suspending jerkbait like a Rattling Rogue or a Husky Jerk. Fish it slow and let it sit for 3-5 seconds at a time. Slow rolling a spinnerbait near the bottom should work as well. The other guys ideas are good to. Keep trying something different til the bass tell you what they want. When you catch one pay attention to where he was (depth, point. ect) and that will help you find and catch more. Good luck! Hillbilly
Re: bassmasters, help me out! I would also throw some spinnerbaits also. Keep the reeling slow, cause these bass are real active yet. Still cold in your air temps. Throwing a spinnerbait in the winter is always a deadly weapon. Also you might wan a hook up a trailer. A worm/or pork trailer.
LifeNRA
Re: bassmasters, help me out! Head to the northern-western part of the lake, keep an eye on water temps. Throw search baits, spinnerbaits, jerkbaits, and crankbaits! If you find some, try a jig & pig with a PORK trailer, not plastic! Plastic doesnt like colder water! Work the jig real slow! Good luck! Hillbilly
Re: bassmasters, help me out! I'd also go around the lake your at and find some big rocks and throw that jig and pork trailer around. Like NRA said, just jig it real slow. Tap it up and down real slow. The big Larries will go nuts!
