buckandbull
I have a moultrie game camera which has a external 12vdc plug to use instead of D batteries. Has anyone tried making their own battery pack? I have some 6v batteries I was thinking of putting in series to get the 12 volts. And then just adding the connector that fits the camera. Has anyone tried anything like this? Anything to look out for? Or can someone point to some instuctions? I don't want to ruin the unit obviously. wtnhunt
Welcome to the forums. Not a moultrie owner, but if the camera has a 12 volt supply line in, it should take a 12 volt source whatever that source is be it solar panel or car battery or 8 D cells, however if the amperage is too high from the source and is not limited somewhere between the source and the components inside the camera it might have the potential to fry something. This is from moultrie's sight pertaining to use of ext power sources, note the bolded print(may void the warranty): Can I use a solar panel on my unit?Answer: Yes and no, depending on the camera model. Moultrie Game Spy cameras made after 2007(operating on 6 D-cell batteries) have an external power port, which only accepts Moultrie's PowerPanel. This is a combination solar panel and 12-volt battery. NOTE: Using an external battery other than the PowerPanel on 2007 and later cameras will void the camera's warranty. Moultrie cameras made before 2007 (operating on a 6-volt battery) that have solar panel connectors located on the bottom right-hand side of the unit are compatible with solar panels. As long as you are using a rechargeable battery, you can use one. NOTE: Do not use a solar panel with a dry cell battery! Remember the solar panel recharges the battery, the camera does not run off the solar panel. My suggestion would be to contact moultrie to be sure before attempting to use the 2 6 volt batteries https://www.moultriefeeders.com/contactus
buckandbull
Thanks for the help. Yeah I think I will do some more research before I try anything like this. I was trying to save some cash by using what I had laying around instead of buying D batteries all the time.
backwoods07
From what I recall, we attached the recommended external battery to a Wildview (or something similar) and it completely melted the inside of the camera. Couldn't tell ya what went wrong there, but it definitely wasn't covered under warranty so be careful.
