Trailcam question

I will be leasing a property in Kansas this year for deer hunting. I live in Minnesota.

What options do I have for trail cams that will transmit pics to my computer at home in Minnesota from Kansas?

I will need a good battery life and quality pics.

Thanks for your suggestions,

Chuck

Welcome to the forums Chuck.

There are different options for cams that will do what you want to do, I have no first hand experience with any of them. Think moultrie has recently added options for some of their cameras using cell technology to transfer images to a home pc. Know there are a few others on the market who have had those type units out for probably at least 3 years or longer but honestly cannot say anything about them. May want to check reviews at chasingame.

Plain old homebrew trailcams and going out every week to two weeks to pull the cards here.

From what I have research Moultrie has the cheaper cost and pretty good battery life on their transmitting cameras. I would suggest a solar power adapter and battery to go along with it. Also from what I have researched, where you will spend most of your money is the cell service and price per each picture. Just my two cents worth.

I looked into these very briefly, so if someone knows more, feel free to correct me.

The cameras and cell units themselves will run you a couple hundred dollars. Moultrie makes a cell system that an be used with several of their higher model cameras, all which have very good battery life on their own. I'm not sure if the cell unit has its own power source or if it shares the batteries from the camera.

The tricky part in this whole ordeal is finding an area with high deer traffic that still can send and receive cell signal. Also, you are going to be hit with monthly service fees, pay per picture (which can get frustrating if you're camera falls, catches 500 pictures of the sun rising or setting, or if you find out the camera is set at a bad angle), and/or stuck in a contract that does you no good between February and August. I was seriously considering one of these until I found all of this out. Do your research and ask more than enough questions!!

moultrie has that set up but it cost lots to operate and set up.

check out the new bushnell trophy trail cam. you can find them under 200 buck and 6 to 12 months battery life. good video on this site about them.
