Slugger
Sorry for the goofy title, just wanted to catch some attn. Here is my situation, I want to use my ML for my sons first whitetail hunt this fall. I have a TC omega .45 cal. I plan on using 195 gr .357 prb dead centers with a very low powder charge. my question is how low can I safely go with 777 fffg (loose powder)I was thinking like 70 grains but didnt know if i could go lower than that or not. I am willing to go as low as possible and still have enough umph to kill a whitetail. He is going to be 7 in april and is currently 50 inches tall and 53lbs, Mentally he is no doubt capable of taking the shot hes just so dang scrawny I dont want him to get all beat up by the shot. Also another problem i am facing is length of pull, The gun is definatly to big for him and I cant find a thing online about youth stocks for Omegas. Anyone know of a custom stock maker who would make an omega stock with an 11.5 inch LOP? Thanks for reading Edited January 24, 2010 by Slugger
Buzz
I have an Encore. Wanting to let my son MZ hunt I loaded it with a 220 gr Barns/RedHot bullet and 70 grs of BlackHorn. At 70 yds almost a hole in a hole and very acceptable recoil. I figure out to 100-125 yds more than adequate to take a whitetail. As for the stock, buy a replacement and cut it off? Thanks for the quick reply , good idea on the stock! I also plan on taking the reflex sight off of my turkey gun and putting in on the ML so he doesnt get it between the eyes with the scope. IM almost more excited about getting to take him hunting this year than going myself
marshall9779
I would say anything 60gr or over is fine. Most states have a minimum powder charge so check your regs first. You could try starting at 50 and let him get used to it and then move up until he starts getting uncomfortable with it.
wtnhunt
Think I would see how that bullet performs with the 70 grains before trying it out on a deer. That should be manageable for a kid that size, my oldest daughter was shooting my black diamond .50 with 85 grains of pyrodex behind a 240 grain xtp mag at about the same age and she is rather small. Don't know about the stock, seems there was someone else asking the same question here not too long back.

Hoosierbuck
I use 70 gr. in one of my Hawkens...kills 'em dead at short range with patched round balls. HB
dbHunterNY
One idea to get around the stock LOP being too long is to put a scope on it with a very long eye relief. I have a Nikon Omega 3-9X30 muzzleloader scope on my prohunter and it has about 5" of eye relief, which should be enough to let your son manage the LOP being farther back and not get hit by the scope bell. fly
Started my daughter out shooting a ML last summer. She shot 250 grain shockwaves with 70 grains of powder. I limited her shot to 60 yards, because that was as far as we practiced. There really wasn't much recoil at all. The sound was the biggest problem she had to overcome. I did buy some ear muffs for her. I also bought a tripod since the ML was too heavy for her to hold. When on the tripod I found the longer stock wasn't that big a deal and she shot fine. Unfortunately we didn't see a deer during the October youth season. Just so you know, I researched this same thing last year and found that back in the day settlers used to take down buffallo with 50 grains of powder as they crossed the plains via train. stcif
I'd shoot that combo over a chrono to get some figures. On a side note it must be nice to live in a state that allows a parent to decide when their child can hunt with them. N.Y. - never!! Luckily for us we have politicians who know nothing about hunting deciding what is best for us.
