Tom2008
I've been using all kinds of minerals for the past 3 or 4 years, but this year I want to stray away from the cheaper stuff like blocks, trophy rock, etc. I want to go with Whitetail Institutes 30-06 minerals or try their cutting edge system. I was wondering which one you would go with and what personal experiences you've had with these products. wtnhunt
Never tried either of those Tom, let us know how whichever you pick works for you. Have had pretty good results here from the trophy rock and likely I will buy a few of them this spring/summer. Have had pretty decent results as well from deer cain, red trace mineral blocks and loose minerals I mixed on my own. Our mineral site is at the edge of a clover plot, the deer likely feed there and get more protein than any mineral lick will provide. It is the calcium or dical/phos in the mineral site that would be what I would look at if it were me because we do have other good sources of palatable food with high protein contents. dogdoc
I use the blocks or mix my own. Usually use the red loose trace minerals and some di-cal phosp. 2 parts mineral to 1 part di-cal. I read on QDMA that some guys are mixing in some ag lime to the mix. I have never used the pre-mix from the food plot companies.
Tom2008
Thanks for the tips guys. I'm leaning towards the Cutting Edge system because they have minerals for each of the seasons to support what the deer need at a certain time. Winter/Early Spring, Late Spring/Summer, and Fall/Winter. I will be combing some use of food plot this year within our 80 acres of woods. I'm going to try the No-Plow by WI. I've seen lots of success with it.
toddyboman
I am a big fan of WI products....however I have never tried there minerals. But I am sure its good stuff as all there other stuff is!
Jorden
We dont use the commercial products. To expensive for not a whole lot of minerals. We just go down to our local Fleet Farm and buy bags of individual minerals and mix our own. You get a heck of a lot more and we really only have to buy the minerals once a year and the deer just hammer them. I highly suggest mixing your own, more minerals for less money. joeaveragehunter
I purchased WI sample pack with a bag of each in it. I have red clay where I hunt and it is impossibly hard to mix the minerals in with the soil. The deer loved it and polished ten pounds off in two weeks. Considering how much I would have to buy, I would have to get a second and third job. Fleet farm 50 lbs block for eight bucks lasts a month. But to each his own and I am looking forward to hearing your results.
Tom2008
I did a little researching just now about mineral mixes and found this from QDMA. Think I'll be trying this rather than buying only 20 lbs of 30-06 for $25.00. Posted it up for others use too. Shouldn't be to hard for me to get this stuff. I only work at the local Mill's Fleet Farm. Widowmaker
I was going to suggest the QDMA website to your Tom2008 but it looks like you found it. I have bought my salt for 3.00, trace mineral salt for 6.00, and found a 50 lb bag of dicalcium phosphate for 22.50. Much better way of doing it for the price and the amount you get. Tom2008
I'll be sure to post up trail camera pictures as activity progresses. I've finally decided to dip into some food plot making and better mineral sites. I found that it worked out very well last year and I only had a mineral site out there. Saw more deer than I've ever seen during a season. I plan on beating that number this season.

Tom2008
i use Trophy Rock it works the best!! I tried it and deer licked it, but weren't hitting it that hard. They loved it a lot more after buying stump licker and pouring it all over the rock and stump.

BearClaw
I've used the red trace mineral block from Tractor Supply (50 lbs for around $7.00). The deer just hammer it but I'm going to try that recipe this year too!
BBR12
I think I will make some of that mix for a few spots on our club.
Pike
Over the years I have tried every type of rock, block, homemade recipe, lick etc. and nothing works any better than the 50 lb. generic blocks/ bags that you can buy at your local TSC or feed store for $5.00 each. And since mineral supplements do not benefit deer in any way other than providing them with a source of salt there is no need to waste money buying a commercial mineral supplement with a huge buck on the package or time and running all over town shopping for ingredients then mixing them etc. when you can just go to your local feed store and buy 50 lb. blocks for less money
