I have to agree with the Texas boys. I have been a New Yorker for 45 years and cannot wait to move to Texas.

Been to West Texas ( Iraan, a 40K acre lease) and the Hill country (Kerrville/Harper/Ingram area). Love 'em all.

Why?

Polite people, tough on crime, awesome game to hunt year round! Great gun laws. Purchase property for decent prices. NO state income tax. Reasonable property tax and can get an AG exemption if you have a cow or two ;). Tremendous sense of pride with Texans...Almost EVERY business and home you will see the US flag and the Lone Star flag. Even in the middle of nowhere.

Texas also has in their constitution that they can leave the United States if they feel Texas' interests are not being served. They voluntarily joined the USA in 1845. They were not purchased, conquered or traded for. That is why the Lone Star can fly at the same height as the USA flag.

Correct me if I am wrong on any of these fellow Texans :)

I only want to leave because of the politics, the dems, the high taxes, the strict gun laws, the unemployment rate, the lack of things to do and the winters. Don't forget about liberals and the lawyers.

I don't want to move to a state that has a bunch of crap crawling around on the ground that can hospitalize me or kill me.....

I have been all down the eastern seaboard and really liked the Carolina's. Liked Georgia but pretty close to some good hurricanes. I have been to Wyoming (Thanks Steve B) and liked it except for the grasshoppers and the stories of what can kill me in a hunting blind (right sskybnd?)

Been to Oklahoma and liked it but seemed to hot for this northern boy...

I like the sound of Illinois (not sure about the winters there, but I don't think they are NY bad).

Would LOVE Alaska except for the winter thing. My wife talks about moving daily and the only thing keeping me here after 15 more days is my parents are still both alive and in their mid 60's.

I want to get out of law enforcement and become a regular citizen... grow my hair a bit, or maybe a shaved head and a goatee....

Do I think I will ever actually move from NY?? About a 40% chance. We have been talking about this for a decade now, that when I retire to move away... just all my roots are here.

Would like a helmet free state too!! LOL

Oooooooooooooooklahoma where the wind comes sweeping down the plains.

No better state than this! One of the lowest costs of living in the Union, the tornado thing is blown way out of proportion, and the people are great. Just ask me, I'll tell you how wonderful I am.

Ben

Yes the tornado thing is out of proportion. Its very real and can be dangerous but as longs as you heed the warnings you’re in little danger. We get notice days in advance.

Strongly Suggest somewhere in the Planes because of the economy and the fact that we are mostly Bible Thumping, Gun Toting, Red States.

If I go into a store in Oklahoma and a person is being threatened I can shoot the aggressor and face no legal recourse.

We have a Church every few blocks and even if you’re not religious its easy to understand the positive impact that has on community.

And gun?! Next to each Church is a gun store/ shop. ;)

Seriously, a lot of the Central States are driven by Oil (Especially Oklahoma and Texas). Our economy, while slower than typical, is not near the dire state the rest of the nation is facing. I know a lot of people and only know of three that are laid off right now and they can still manage to pay their bills. ;)

Ken, I read this thread to the Wife just now after she came home from the night shift.

Her opinion: "What I believe and in my experience if you make a decision and it does not work out you can change it. Dont be afraid to make a move. If you do and it is not what you thought it would be just remember how you got there in the first place...you moved and you can do it again".

...and I had to laugh when I read this:

or maybe a shaved head and a goatee....

Just had my head shaved yesterday and got my full beard cut back to a goatee...ROTFLMBO

West Texas would be the place for you Ken. Very seldom is there a hurricane that hits, hardly any tornados, and mild winters. There's mule deer, whitetail, feral hogs, javelina, turkey and list goes on.

What?! I guess we watch differnt news channels. It seems that DFW and everything north/ NW get them on a regular basis. ;) :poke:

Kentucky sounds like a place to consider Ken.

Conservative views for the most part.

Pretty decent big game hunting (elk and deer hunting is getting better).

Lexington has UK which will provide the cultural experiences your kids, wife, and yes even you need.

I had a friend that lived in Lexington and I visited him there a few times. I was surprised at how clean and friendly the area was. It's not that far from Cinci or Louisville.

Good luck.

We get about 3 weeks of really, really hot weather. Other than that its not horrible. However, those three weeks are painful. Most of us just do stuff later at night like setting limb lines and such.

Would like a helmet free state too!! LOL

I think most stats around here are. ;)

Illinois and politics, the dems, the high taxes, the strict gun laws, the unemployment rate, liberals and the lawyers go hand and hand.

Jumping from the pan into the fire, no???

That rules out this state, our state sales tax is near 10 percent, however we do not have state income tax. Our governor is a liberal piece of garbage, I am being nice.

LMBO. Probably rules out most of the southern states Ken. Here we have copperheads, timber rattlers, and tons of cottonmouths. Least in Wyoming the rattlesnakes may give a warning.

Sounding more and more like you may want to check out Kentucky.

Washington.

Everything you can think of is here.

Every big game animal, small game, waterfowl and so on.

Every type of weather you can think of within 2 hours from anywhere. Every terrain you can think of within 2 hours from everywhere. No huge natural diasters like tornados, hurricanes, or earthquackes. The only real one is a couple of rather large volcanos. But hey, if they do blow the entire country will feel them, so that shouldnt limit you. From west to east across the state it is.....

Nice coast, massive mountains, nice rolling hills, desert, rolling wheat hills, and more mountains. All the fishing you could want from catfish, bass, sturgeon, salmon, trout and so on. And all the big game of whitetail, mule deer, elk, moose, cougar, turkey, to some of the best waterfowl in the country. No state income tax!!! Kind of a liberal state but its managable. Very good economy where I am located. Whatelse.....Can't think of anything right now. Can post plenty of amazing pictures if you need to see them.

Ken the winters in IL depend on what part of IL you live in. The winters are very mild in the lower 1/4 portion of the state. Similar to Kentucky/Tennessee. Once you get to Springfield winter is no longer mild. Chicago can be down right cold.

IL is a helmet free state.
