What state should I move to??

IL. has the worst gun laws Ken! In certain parts of the Chicago area you are not allowed to have handguns. The NRA is fighting this saying it is unconstitutional! The mob runs the northern part of IL. Most of the southern part is conservative and has very good hunting. Land is way overpriced in our area of Adams County because we are right next to Pike County and everyone wants to own land there for some reason!;)

We live out in the country where our nearest neighbor is 1/2 mile on either side and a very low crime area.

Nice coast, massive mountains, nice rolling hills, desert, rolling wheat hills, and more mountains. All the fishing you could want from catfish, bass, sturgeon, salmon, trout and so on. And all the big game of whitetail, mule deer, elk, moose, cougar, turkey, to some of the best waterfowl in the country. No state income tax!!! Kind of a liberal state but its manageable. Very good economy where I am located. What else.....Can't think of anything right now. Can post plenty of amazing pictures if you need to see them.

You forgot the Coastal Blacktails :):)

Actually, going by what you described you're looking for, that sounds like southern Ohio.

I have to agree, ive spent several years living in southern OH, i truly loved every minute of it!

Also since visiting Kansas and Nebraska to hunt i found them to be very appealing. Kansas especially.

Not to hijack but just got a present in the mail from NY state....."we audited you from back in 2006 and we feel you owe us $500.00 plus $111.00 for interest" I had a stinkin cpa do those taxes!!!

NY looking for more money from pop, cigs and now audit anyone you can to make up the money:bang:

Good luck in your retirement! WI sucks as bad as IL, can't wait to PCS from here(born and raised too). Laundry list of places that fit your bill that I lived in-GA, SC, KY, TX. Luckily I married a Texan that wants to live way out in the sticks when I retire in 9 years, we start the land searching this summer! Again, congrats to you and good luck in your search!

In a e mail I got yesterday from a friend who lives in Texas and is doing his best to persuade me to move there. It might be a joke...but it hit home about the topic and gun ownership there.

Thought you'd enjoy it being a LEO :) .

I was going home this evening at 5 pm right before dark and I was going fast. Right before Chappelhill on 290 a Hypo (Texas Dept of Public Safety Officer) pulled me over. I always have a smile on my face and act courteous with the cops. He came to my passenger window and asked for my license and insurance and said "your were going 77 in a 70" I gave him my handgun license and drivers license and said wow the wind was pushing me then, and then I truthfully told him that I had been on the road since 6am and went to Temple Texas to Scott and White as my mother in law had a part of her lung removed and we sat in the waiting room most of the day and she came out of surgery fine and I'm on the back to Houston.

Then he asked "where is your handgun" I said on the back seat, I drive Jeep Grand Cherokee, he said "your tint on the back window is real dark, can I "he" move it to the very back behind the rear seat in the cargo area, I said yes, he said he was going to open the rear door (remember he is on the passenger side) he opens the door and picks it up and sets in the far rear area then looks on the floor board and starring at him is my AK-47, he smiles and said I will have to set that back there too. So he does. He had a big smile and said you know I can't let you sit in here with a .45 and a AK while I run your registration because your tint is too dark, he said I have to ask you to stand outside your vehicle! I said "Okay no problem." He came back and gave me a warning! No ticket. I said to him "that's great and I even had a AK!" I talk too much. And said to him, I never go out of town now without it now days because the world might break when I'm on the road, and I laugh and say I listen too much to Glenn Beck! The DPS officer said "I don't blame you at all, in fact I want you to help me if it happens! I want you on my side! You will be on my side right? I replied: "Yes, I'm a good guy"! I became flushed upon hearing this from the young officer! We shook hands and I left feeling good! Sometimes respect is mutual. I hope one day I can buy him lunch at the least! - Word in Texas

This dovetails nicely with my recent comments about the prevailing attitudes about gun ownership. If you don't live in a gun friendly region, then move.

congrats on the retirement Ken. since you like to hunt a lot of differant game, then theres only one choice. thats the North West USA. ;)

i would trade warm winters for Elk, Mulies, Whitetails, antelope, bear, moose, great fishing and beautifull scenery. i have been fortunate enough to have traveled a lot of places in the country, but when i got my first view of the Rockies everywhere else just seems small.

Iowa would be a great choice for you. great place and freindly people, but we only have big deer to chase and turkeys. fishing is pretty good as well, but we get a few tornados and the winters can be pretty nasty at times. if i didnt like my job so much here i would go out West in a heartbeat.

I would say maybe northern Georgia,Alabama in that region. If you can live with very mild winters I would say Southern Indiana,Kentucky area has your hills and not in "tornado ally" and away from hurricanes and earth quakes. Also your not in the mountains so your not trapped when a ice storm or something like that come through.

Man this has been a great thread!! I have been reading the responses to my wife. I don't want anyone to think I am retiring exactly on that date. That is my date of eligibility. I will complete 20 years in law enforcement on Friday February 12th. I can retire at any point after that date. My wife leans towards North Carolina and the beach, I lean towards the midwest. For now we are staying put until life determines we are able to go. My aging parents hold me here for the time being. I love them dearly and do not want to miss any time with them. Keep the great posts coming though!! I'm loving them

...... lets pick a state that I should move to.

I can't believe nobody's suggested Pennsylvania.

Want to be north of hurricanes

Check.

east of tornadoes and earthquakes

Check.

Want nice rolling hills

Check

good game to hunt

Check.....pretty much.

the ability to defend myself, my family and my home with a firearm if necessary.

Check

with a better economy, and more opportunities for our children.

Not so sure on that one

south of winter.

Oh............... ..............nevermind.

Well...I guess if you went to the other end of PA.........the southeast has relatively mild winters, really. But then the hunting opportunities start to thin out.

Let's face it. Pennsylvania is pathetic. Keep going when you get here.
