maddhunter
And whatever you do don't buy a Rem. 770. They are trash. Wal Mart has the youth Rem. 700 ADL .243 with scope for $467. Just bought one and it's a tack driver with 100grn for deer or 55 grn for yotes. Savage is also a very good gun I have one in .270 also a tack driver and are a little cheaper than Remington and just as good, you can pick up one for under $400. And don't be afraid to buy the higher calibers used (.270,30-06, .300s, 25-06) as they usually aren't shot as much as they smaller ones (.243, .308,30-30, 7mm08). And always use good amo, the better amo you use the longer your barrel will last, especially in the faster calibers (.243,.270, and .22s)
JimT
When I stop at various Walmarts I still see the Weatherby Vanguards with the brown spiderwebbed stocks being clearanced for $350.00. They are a good buy. Mark I have one in 7MMM. It is a good shooter for the money. My fiance shoots a 710 .243 and the bolt is far from smooth, but man does it shoot nice. If this is going to be your one and done gun I would go with a .270 Winchester or 30/06.
Dakota
If you're looking for a good bolt-action, I'd recommend either a Winchester 70 or Remington 700 in a .270 or .30-06 (preferably .30-06). Pair that with a 150 gr. bullet and you're set for deer, antelope, bear and elk. If you're looking for something a little more economical I'd recommend a New England Firearms single-shot in one of those two calibers. Either way, Carson, I'd top the rifle with a good quality 3-9x40 scope; maybe a Nikon or Bushnell. Good luck with the purchase! Jeramie
The 770 replaced the 710. Thats the post I was looking for. The 770 is the 710 in a different package... I agree with everyone, pickup a 700 ADL. Most pawn shops will have one for anywhere from $375 - $450. They are worth every penny. If that is still a bit much look at the old Savage 110's. The 110 isnt pretty but they are a good shooting rifle and are typically cheap. Ive seen them sale from $200 - $350 (unless its a custom). As far as Cal there are several good deer rounds but the .30-06 is probalby the most versatile. You can shoot everything from Bear to Prairie Dogs.... Ammo is very easy to find too. But as far as choices go here is a short list of great Deer rounds. Some may have harder to find ammo (marked with a *) 6mm .243 .25-06 .260 * .270 .280 * .308 .30-06 .300winmag and dont forget the old 7mm I personally dont "love" the mag cals (extra recoil with very little gain inside of 300 yards). I also didnt list the .30-30. Granted it has been around forever and is a decent old gun but beyond 100 yards its greatly lacking. Even the .243 has more energy... BBR12
Ruger M77 in 7mm-08 is my favorite. Fairly economical and a great shooter.
