Hoosierbuck
Anybody ever think of using how long a decent road-killed deer lays as an economic indicator? I just did today, and the news is good. On my way to town at 7:15 this a.m. I saw a big doe that was hit, and I could still see her slide marks where she went into the grassy median. Must have been within a half hour or less due to the falling snow. Ambient air temps=12 F, overcast. It looked intact. I thought some hungry hoosier will have that gone in no time. On my way out of town around noon, she was still there. Back into town around 2-still there. I gave her a ride. I ain't too proud, and I hate seeing the meat go to waste. I lost very little meat off her actually, just a little bit off the one back quarter. She got tagged midship and broke ribs and hemorrhaged internally, but didn't bruise the backstraps. She was starting to freeze solid on the extremities, so a little tough to skin the legs. Other than that, I am happy as a clam, and none of that tinge of remorse I get when I have shot them. I love backstraps. Anyone else willing to admit they ain't too proud and won't let one go to waste? HB
Doe-ee
Waste not, want not.
redkneck
Can't say that I've ever done that, but with temps down here, not many times it's even advisable. I've picked up 2 myself that I've smacked over the years including the one 2 nights ago. You did a good thing my friend beating the buzzards. m gardner
Glad to hear there's still some states that allow you to claim roadkill. Since I moved here to Az I haven't had any. I picked up my first a week after I got here and went to the Game and Fish to get a tag for it. They took it away from me! Said if I didn't hit it it wasn't allowed. I need to go back to a Redneck friendly place. Roadkill is good food! Mark
HUNTINGMAN
I guess raodkill would be ok as long as it wasn't a possum or skunk. Only way I'm eating roadkill is if I hit it or see it get hit,but to each his own. It would be nice to have some fresh backstraps though, congrats on your harvest. Tominator
Got a call one April evening from a buddy. His mother in law was leaving his house and tagged a little buck (still carrying both antlers), so I came over and helped him butcher it. We lost one of the back legs, but other than that, it was yummy.

camoman1
I went back to get one that was hit minutes before I passed it. The guy was still there, he was taking it home so I lost out on that one. My dad hit one a few years back that wasnt too beat up so we saved what we could off that one......Id do it again too. woolybear
Have pulled off a few emergency backstrap extractions on the shoulder of the road, lol. One time was enough for taking the whole deer.
Adjam5
I would, but the most I have done is cut off antlers from half eaten bucks on the side of a road, and feeling sad the backstraps went to waste.
Tominator
Have pulled off a few emergency backstrap extractions on the shoulder of the road, lol. One time was enough for taking the whole deer. Thinking back to December 9, I should have thrown a knife and a few ziplocs in the truck when I went and rescued my wife and daughter from their doe run-in, but I was so ticked we had to put that car in the body shop, I was in no mood to butcher a deer on the side of the road. I think it would have really freaked my wife out too.
RangerClay
I keep a knife and a garbage bag in my truck for just that reason. However because MOST deer are all bruised up, I take just the straps. Usually I'm in dress clothes during the week so handling and gutting deer is not an option. Stripping a deer of straps is usually a blood free process.
wtnhunt
Roadkill is legal here, but have not ever picked one up.
Diamond Archer 01
My dad has taken a deer that was dead off the road I think.
PotashRLS
If your theory is true HB, then Wisconsin is really bad off. I haven't seen a roadkill since November. I commute 94 miles a day for work!!!
Turkeygirl
I see deer all the time around here that get hit and never get picked up..Well actually back in December during muzzeloader/late bow there was a doe hit, saw it hen I went out goose hunting...It was gone later that afternoon. for the most though ALOT of deer meat goes to waste in my parts...It's a shame because people whine how poor they are, etc... (I live in the poorest county) yet there's plenty of deer meat laying on the side of the road...
Turkeygirl
One time driving to class, there was a small doe hit and laying in the road...it was snowing heavy so I got out to pull her over to the side because I figured someone may have an accident in the bad weather and go off after going over the top of her. Well she was still warm! I went back later to get her and she was gone. Had a class later that day and found out my one outdoor rec. professor had hit her and my other outdoor rec professor got her and took her to butcher, lol. But he thanked me for pulling her out of the road! ha ha
Rhino
Like John said...it better be fresh road kill if you're going to get it here in MS. Never had that opportunity for fresh road kill. Came close once when I was ridding with a friend that hit a young buck. The deer got up and hobbled off.
GWSmith
I had one get hit right in front of my house one evening...It actually landed in my yard. It got taken to the garage and field dressed...the next day it got dragged back out to the road. I was willing but the Peoples Republic of New York would'nt let me keep it because it was hit by a vehicle and my home is within the CWD containment area. I was willing to use a tag I had, drive it to the check station to be sampled for CWD, but they still would not let me keep it. I was even threatened with charges by the official I talked to on the phone for attempting to keep it. I had to drag it back out to the road immediately...then it sat there for 4 days before the state came and picked it up! I still have a copy of the letter I wrote the former head of the DNR in New York! In part of which I stated that I could get a ticket for "Wanton Waste" of a game animal but what the state did was exactly the same thing! Hoosierbuck
In Indiana any law enforcement officer can issue you a RK deer possession permit. I have done it that way when it's easy for them and me, or I could write myself a permit, or just rely on the shiny permit in my wallet, which is what I opted for in this case. They just ask if you had to put it down with a shot, check to see if your story matches up with the condition of the animal, etc. Just making sure you didn't poach it, basically. There are no reporting requirements so it does not affect harvest data or anything. HB
PA_Spike_King
This was a deer my Dad picked up this fall. Yes I know it is bear season but a deer was hit out on rte 64 near our road intersection. It was laying in the ditch but was still alive. I called the game commission and received permission to put the deer down and if I wanted it to take it. My neighbor and friend Tom Arnold went along. Needless to say we caused a bit of concern from several folks living near there. It turned out it was a buck but only had about a 2 inch stub on one side and the other side looked like it had been broken out of the skull. Just before supper the local game protector stopped by and issued a permit for the deer. He was a real nice guy. Of course I saved him a messy job so I am sure that made him happy. Nice thing was when we skinned the deer there were no bruises on the body, just the head. And I also got some meat from this deer because I loaned my garage for the the skinning. BuckNrut
Keep a tarp in the car all the time for this very reason. Picked up road kill on every major holiday except 4th of July! Still hoping to complete the grand slam someday.
Hoosierbuck
No doubt around Rochester. I have never seen so many roadkilled deer as I did on a trip through Pittsburgh up to Rochester and home. One of my old college buddies lives in Penfield. I should get back there to visit him again.
