Morning or afternoon?

Re: Morning or afternoon?

It depends on the time of the year for me....In early season I stick primarily to evening hunts due to the fact that deer are very patternable in the early season.....Once the rut starts though it can be any time event.......

Also I hunt deep woods in the morning closer to the bedding areas and hunt field edges and known travel corridors to feeding areas in the evening........

Afternoon, hands down. I have killed way more deer in the afternoon. Unless its really cold or they are in a hard rut, I dont see much movement until evenings. They come out like clockwork every evening. Usually I only catch a glimpse of them on they way to bed in the mornings....They dont mill around and give me a chance.

Re: Morning or afternoon?

I would rather hunt mornings. Up until this season, all of my successful hunts have been in the morning.

However, this season I'm seeing all my deer in the late afternoon, early evening....

I do NOT like tracking deer in the dark......

I will hunt both until my tags are filled, barring a few exceptions..... grin.gif

Re: Morning or afternoon?

I hate to track after dark, but I must admit that I have much higher success rate (especially in early season) during evening hunts. I just see a lot more deer then.

What I really like about evening is that once you get there, in theory every minute that goes by gets to be better hunting and then there is a definate ending point (end of legal hours). Mornings are tougher for me. The best hunting peaks and then it is down hill from there with the occassional late morning movers. Also, there is no definate cut off time. I'm always questioning myself ... "It's 9:30, is it too early to leave?" type stuff.

Re: Morning or afternoon?

Stictly for my own comfort, I prefer evenings. I can be pretty lazy sometimes. grin.gif

However, percentage-wise, I have been much more productive in the mornings. When I can pry myself out there in the morning, a lot of them have produced more deer sightings and shot opportunities.

This year, I am going to make a better effort to do it right and get out there and hunt both mornings and afternoons.

By the way, it's nice to know that you have the entire day of broad daylight to do your bloodtrailing when you are hunting the mornings. It makes things a lot easier.

Re: Morning or afternoon?

I like the mornings. I see more deer. I see deer in the evening but they are moving late, the time is just about the time its time to leave my stand.

The weather is much cooler in the morning and they just seem to be moving more. Seen 15 the other morning in my wife's hot spot. Thats the other reason I like mornings, I put the wife in a honey of a spot and she doesn't like mornings, she prefers sleep, guess thats why I like mornings even more, being able to hunt her spot!! smile.gif

Re: Morning or afternoon?

During the first part of the season when its warm afternoons are a lot better for me than mornings because I hunt food sources.

When temperates drop in the 50s or below & the rut kicks I see alot of bucks in open fields & trails in the mornings well after sun up.

But when the rut is over & winter kicks in, afternoons over a corn field or food plot are the best. That's how its worked out for me thus far.
