First ebay transaction, got hosed (literally)

At *ahem* someone's suggestion here I bought a new carburetor off Ebay for my quad. I let the gas set up and found it was just about as cheap to get a new carb off Ebay than to buy the parts to overhaul mine.

Well, the seller (Wincycles) sent the carb out very quickly and it came in just fine. The problem is that the hosehead that put it together cut all except one of the tubes on the carb so short that to attach them, it kinked the hoses.

Further, one of the hoses is apparently so old it looks to be dry rotted in one of the bends. It appears that this hose was attempted to be fixed with some sort of clear fingernail polish or something.

I really am disappointed. The person who put this together had to know that this was not a working carb...the hoses are 100% kinked.

I will see what the seller says, but just the fact that this seller let this out of his shop says much. A monkey could have figured out that this carb is unusable!

That is too bad New, but guess I am curious about the hoses you are talking about. Would not have thought the carb would come with any hoses attached. Possible they cut the hoses when they pulled it from whatever bike they pulled it off of.

Have had a few deals with ebay not work out, but recovered my money on them. If it had been me I would have just cleaned your old carb.

I've had one bad experience on ebay in about 70... it was by a person named WideGlidemom... I sold her a childs Harley Davidson outfit that was brand new with tags. My son had got two of the same identical outfits. She called me out on a 9 dollar Harley Davidson childs clothing sale and said it was not "new" because the tag had a manufacturers date of the previous year on it. I told her it most certainly was too brand new, it was given as a Christmas gift and the tags were never removed. She cried, threatened to ruin my feedback rating, so I credited her half her money back. She was a piece of work.... just running a scam to save $4.50. Wow... big savings....

Ha, it is your fault Jeramie! :D

I contacted the seller and they said to send it back for an exchange and once they got the unit, they would refund my costs of shipping it to them.

This seller has 7500 sales with only one negative so I guess I will ship it back. I hesitate to send the unit back because I am taking a leap of faith that they won't just keep the unit.

This is actually a new unit and whomever built it just was being cheap with the hoses I guess. It is glaringly obvious or should be that this is bad.

I will let you know. Everyone makes mistakes and while this is a pain in the rump if they make it right I will give them props.

Thanks,

This carb looks like an artificial heart...I am too dumb to even begin to explain what each of the parts are. There are three hoses that move gas from one side to the other for some reason and they actually come attached.

I will take some pics so you all know I am not just crying in my cereal over a bad deal. The carb looks great as far as the parts....very nice. Just tried to be a little too stingy on the hoses.

  • 2 weeks later...

I wanted to give an update on this carburetor issue. I contacted the seller and was somewhat concerned because ebay said that the seller didn't take returns.

I called the local dealer to see what the hoses would cost and it was ~$25. So just fixing it myself was out.

The seller took the return after all and even credited me the cost of my shipping back to them. The new carburetor was perfect.

I put it on, gave it a couple pumps of the throttle and vrooom vrooom.

Thanks for the suggestion, it was easier than rebuilding it.

Glad to hear it worked out. I learned a long time ago Carbs are not worth working on if a good aftermarket can be found. ;)

I actually tried to rebuild a carb on a Ford 9n. Ended up buying an aftermarket and it too worked MUCH better... I had even went so far as to blast the original and replace all of the seals! Still didnt work as good as the new carb.
