Turkey gun

Gonna start turkey hunting this year, looking for an affordable gun. I was looking at the H&R Pardner Turkey gun in a 10 gauge. Am I crazy for wanting a 10 gauge or is it just the OTPG blood coming out in me? I've always wanted a 10 gauge, but haven't got one because all the ones I've seen are over $1000. For the amount that I'll use it, I don't want to drop a grand on one. I was browsing the Canada Cabelas website and came across one for $299. I watched some youtube videos of people shooting them and they don't seem to kick all that bad really. Sure they pack a punch, but recoil doesn't really bother me that much. Should I pull the trigger on this cannon? :D

Not gonna get it yet since turkey season doesn't start til april...

I have one and I am happy with it...But, it is not always easy finding 10GA shells for the thing. 12GA or 20GA shells would be easier to find...To help mitigate the recoil, I installed a Mercury Recoil Reducer in the stock bolt hole. C&H custom cut it to fit my stock according to my provided measurements...Voila, less felt recoil.

Thanks! I see 10ga shells in stores here all the time, so I'm not worried about that. I'll try out that recoil reducer if I find the recoil is a little heavy.

My original, dedicated turkey slayer was a BPS 10 ga. It is a monster. It will wallop (the livin' crap out of) a feller but good. But it also throws some unbelievable patterns. I eventually got tired of lugging the extra weight and tricked out a Super X2. It's almost the equivalent, patternwise, to the 10 but with a tad less recoil (O.K............a lot less) and reduced weight. I've not played with a single barrel 10. I know some of them are really heavy and pretty sane to shoot while others are light (like the BPS) and brutal.

Does the N.E.F. have a threaded barrel for choke tubes??

Had the H&R single shot about 25 years ago. Wish I would have held onto it. Mine had the 32" full choke barrel and weighed 11 lbs. Not too bad to shoot, more of a BIG push than a sharp kick although it kicked. I could get about 6 shots off patterning it before things started to hurt, haha. Back then though the loads that exist nowadays for other gauges weren't around. The reason I got it was I had shot at a big gobbler that "hung up" at 40 yds. with a 20 gauge shooting the Fed. 3" premium #4 shot. Other than the horendous kick (little over/under savage 24 with .22 on top) it had the same effect as shooting a blank at the turkey. But with todays ammo for 20's and 12's I'm sure they do better. Don't think they will ever catch the 10 for range and velocity though. If that new 10 NEF is the one that only weighs around 8 lbs., I don't want to shoot it, LOL. :tt1:

I can read it all ready. Realtree news, NEF big 10 knocks off a mechanics new glasses and now he can't shoot that monster.... more Realtree news as it can be passed along. LOL. Sorry Shaun.

LOL!! :D

I shot my cousins Remington 870 turkey gun with the shurshot stock with a 3 1/2" turkey load, not sure what that gun weighs, I would say 6-7 pounds. That sucker kicked hard enough. Nothing I couldn't handle though. My cousin was only around 5'9" 130lbs at the time. It literally knocked him on his rear end and split his lip open!:jaw:

It's different.

I'm pretty familiar with the in's & out's of free recoil. I know it should not matter. But it does.

I have shot numerous Mossback 835's with 3 1/2 inchers. I've listened to a lot of guys bemoan the characteristics of the back end of the 835 when it goes off. I've never thought they were much problem at all. I'll offer to supply as many 3 1/2 inch 10 ga. shells for free as anybody wants to run through Geraldine (my BPS 10) from bags & bench. It'd be worth the cost purely for the entertainment value.

The 10 gauge is just plain awesome, best 100 bucks I ever spent. Took the big chunk of weight out of the stock so it's lighter and still more delightful to shoot than my benelli or 870 I use to have. It's hard to imagine but like the other guy said, its more of a push feeling than a quick kick. Much less painful than my benelli sbe, 870, or 835 ultimag. Shooting Hevi 13, 2 3/8oz #5s with a jellyhead tube. AMAZING

I'd stick with a 3" 12 gauge........you don't need a 3 1/2" 12 or 10 gauge for turkey hunting. That single shot 10 will really wallop your shoulder big time, as well as that Mossburg 3 1/2 " 12 gauge!!! They are both extremely hard kickers. Besides the extra cost for the larger shells!!! Get a Remington or Winchester 1300 12 gauge pump. Faster second shot if needed and a lot less brutal on your shoulder. While you might not feel the recoil on an actual hunt, it's at the pattern boards where you'll be shooting quite a few shells and trying out a few chokes to get the best pattern, is when your shoulder will start waving the white flag.

Shaun, don't know what's legal to use in your part of "canuckistan" (LOL), but if I didn't already have an 1187, I would jump on the new model from Weatherby, of all co's., that are now offering an autoloader that will handle reg. 12's and 3 in. mags. without doing anything but changing the piston or something (quick change) for 3 in. Almost like having an 1187 for only 450 usdollars. Probably around 375 from a good friendly dealer, haha. They just came out with it about 2 months ago. Thinking about getting one myself just to have one. Something to consider cause most people I know that have 3 1/2 inchers only shoot 3's due to recoil and price, and the autos. really tame recoil.

Yeah I know, but I already have a 12ga, use it for duck hunting and the odd partridge hunt when I don't carry my 28ga BPS. I want a 10ga! :D

Buy it......nothing like sending over 2 oz of lead at a bird.....my buddy, little old guy (66) weighs about 135 lbs...I think his gun weighs more than him.....he has leveled turkeys quite a poke in the Missouri woods with the same gun......everyone asks him "Why do you shoot such a huge gun" his reply is " I want the turkeys to just surrender, but Im willin' to show em why they should of to begin with" HE hunts 5 different states with that cannon, and loves it....he tells me "builds character, and the birds fall over from the aftershock....lol" Let me see it when you get it......al

I had a pardner 10ga turkey gun for a long time and loved it. It had a screw in choke that I replaced with a kicks gobbling thunder ported tube. I shot 3.5" shells and the recoil wasn't that bad,the barrell is heavy and the stock has a metel rod in it to counter balance the weight. I sold it a couple years ago and bought my benneli. Only reason I sold it was because it was getting harder to find shells for around here. I say get it,you won't be disapointed.
