Adjam5
Had many mornings of cleaning up trash all over my yard and neighbors yards due to a coon tipping my pails. The edges of the pails have been chewed upon also. I had about enough of it. I set out the live trap( coon season is still open til Feb 15th) and yes I have a trapping license . It was a male with a good fat layer on him. This one makes #4 this year. The rest were caught up at hunting camp. The set up on the side of the house. The fatty awaiting his fate. His fate came...between the eyes. I usually don't shoot them between the eyes. They bleed too much. I usually use a .22mag in the lungs. A small hole and they expire fast. But it was early in the morning and my neighbors would not appreciate the sonic boom of the .22mag. This guy got two .22 sub sonics at point blank in the lungs and was still hanging on. He deserved to go quickly. I owed him that. Thats when he got the .22 short between the eyes. A nice prime fur pelt that will be off to the tannery soon with the others. I case skin them with the face on.
wtnhunt
Cool you got him Anthony. Did not see too terribly many coons here this year while out hunting, but sure they are around.

Tominator
I hates coons. Got too many around me. They got so bad in the summer in my sweet corn one year I finally called my DNR agent and asked what I can do. He told me to live trap them and kill them. In fact, he told me that it's against the law to trap and relocate them. Anyway, I usually set my trap around late July and leave it out until nearly October. I have found a .177 cal pellet right at the base of the skull works best. I've seen way too many shots between the eyes take too long. Right at the base of the skull ends it in seconds. Adjam5
Thanks guys...wanna hear something funny? My neighbor 4 houses down paid a animal control guy about $600 to catch the coons tipping his pails. They only caught 2 small ones, not the big one he said hisses at him when he leaves for work in the morning. Sheesh... I would have trapped them all for only..$300:D. We have fox here also, yotes too! But too many let their dog run loose around here. So 1 1/2 and #2 leg holds would be no good. I am limited to whatever fits into the cage trap here at home. The trash pails seem to be a good spot! Keep in mind I live about 40 miles north of NYC. What a misplaced redneck/hillbilly I am:p. That is too funny!!!! Maybe you should have baited them with your trash cans and came to an agreement with the neighbor. A few hundred bucks would certainly make you a bit more tolerant of your potential cashcow:yes:. Look at all the ammo you could have bought. BTW.......where is all your snow??? redkneck
Nice Anthony! I'll second Chris on the pellet rifle, though I've had to shoot a few more than once. I like a .22 short, but every now and then you get a pass through and cut a wire in two. They are a real nuisance for sure. I saw more 'possums this year than anything, and swacked one with my bow at last light on Sat and Sunday afternoons. You should tell your neighbor you'll remove them for a bounty, I bet he'd be happy to pay 25 bucks for them, I know I'd be happy to catch them at that price
Adjam5
BTW.......where is all your snow??? We had a few days in the mid 40's and even got as high as 50* here so the snow melted. We have some snow now, but more is coming this weekend. Chris, John...I will give the pellet gun a try on the next one. But with the fat layer they have on them, I didn't think I would get the penetration I needed. That is why the trap came in the garage and I shot it in there against a stack of newspapers. Didn't even get a pass through at point blank.

You don't need pass through, just as long as you hit that medulla, it's over in seconds. :eat: Ain't much fat at the base of the head. :gunsmilie: I'll second what John said on the .22, I'd always be afraid of the bullet cutting the trap itself. I used to be a NYS DEC Nuisance Wildlife Control Officer (aka trapper). I used to have a lot of fun with it and made good money at it. Where else will you get paid $50 for a skunk. Unfortunately some people think that cats are are as important as their children so us nuisance trappers had to have insurance. It drove the prices WAY up. To answer Chris's question. We were ordered years ago to to stop transporting and kill coons on site then bury them deep. They do not what rabies being transported across county lines.
