Jeramie
Remember the good old days when you could buy a computer and it had word, excel, etc already on it?! Not anymore. My laptop that I bought last year had the stinking trial versions. I have a couple of uses and they are gone. Ive thought I just buy Office but WOW.... :jaw: Expensive stuff. I looked on Ebay and it seems to be much cheaper, especially if I buy the 2003 version. Im fine with that as I am not looking to change the world with the software. The only problem I have is will it run on XP? Another question is, will it be ligit? Can they sale the license of a used software? I need a copy in a bad way but cant toss the $350 out for the 2007 copy from Microsoft.
bfletch7441
Try openoffice.org It's free, and has a lot of the same capabilities of Microsoft Office. The commands are mostly the same, but it has some differences. Ben
Michiganbowhunter_SQ2
$350? what version are you looking for (i'm guessing small business or professional?) or what programs do you need?
redkneck
I thought in 2003 they started that activation stuff, may want to check into it a little to see if you got virgin stuff or not. Without activation you wont have squat. Or.... just get office 2000 on ebay for super cheap, just make sure you got the product key, then download the 2007 office conversion software and you're good to go. PS - There wasnt enough difference in 2000 vs 2003 to make a hill of beans to me. PSS - Any of that stuff will run on your XP PC without issue. TBow
I just went through the same scenario. Had the trial version on my new computer, but when it expired, I was looking at $400 plus for MS Office 2007. I got it from a distributor in the US on line for $200. It included Word, Excel, Power Point and Outlook. I bought the authorized MS disk only and saved a few bucks than if I'd requested the manual and instructions and all. It came with the procuct ID number and activation codes. When I checked on some of the internet classified and auction sites, there was some talk as to whether the copied disks (from China) would work the full suite or not, so I didn't want to take the chance. If I'd a taken that chance I could have gotten Office 2007 for about $100. TBow
redkneck
Oh yeah, come to think of it, I might have an unopened copy of office basic '03 you can have if you want. Let me know. I gotta take the kids to gym tonight, but I'll get back to you later today or tom.
wtnhunt
Bought the office 2003 suite when I bought my dell, don't think it was even $100, it came already installed on the machine and also got the backup copy on cd which is good because I need to reformat this computer. Office 2003 will run with xp just fine, not so sure about trusting the copies on ebay, would depend on whether it was a high rated seller and where they were, I won't buy from sellers outside north america. Jeramie
Sounds like there is a wide range of prices... I checked Office Depot because its here in the parking lot at my office. It was $350. So what am I missing? Is the small business version that much greater than the others? and redneck... if you have it I will happily buy it from you. Im going to have to buy a copy anyway. Id be just as happy to send that money to another forum member.
c_lou
I think our copy from Best Buy was like $110. It's just the home version.
redkneck
Jeramie I'll send it to ya at no charge if you'll shoot me your addy. But I wont be back at that location till Monday (I go to work at 2 diff plants). I see lots of different prices, but office basic, which I believe is now called office standard is much cheaper than office professional which comes with powerpoint, access, and a few other goodies that are well worth the cash.... IF you need those applications.

Yep, I got the entire Microsoft office 2007 package for like $85 just because I am in college. Very good deal.
ruttinbuc
You will never use all that office does in the first place. There is so much there that goes unused. Be nice to see something with just the basics for a reasonable price. $350 is nuts. Office Depot and Staples cater to business that is where you will pay the most. Agreed, I work in the IT department at my college, and the students get it for free, others can purchase it for 5 or 10 bucks...I'd check out a local college
