Shed found while fishing

Went fishing this morning at a local pond, was cruising up a creek channel, found this shed laying on the shore. Would have never thought that would happen!! Check out the second pic, this antler has several holes in it, hard to tell what caused it. [image]785Hpim0873-med.jpg [/image] [image]785Hpim0874-med.jpg[/image] [image]785Hpim0875-med.jpg [/image]

Nice shed.I heard that holes on the beam like that are caused when the buck rubs some of the velvet off causing an injury. Then the antler just keeps growing out around the dead part.As for the hole by the tine that could have been where a big blood vessel brought blood to the horn.

Re: Shed found while fishing

I found a buck my uncle lost a year after he shot it and there were two holes ,one on each main beam in the same spot below the g3,s.I figured he hit both on something and the antlers just grew around the injury. Not much left of them but I will try and have a pic tommorrow. What,s the chance of two bugs causing the same thing in the same spot?

Re: Shed found while fishing

That sure is a heck of a hole in that shed. My largest shed from last year also has several holes in the mainbeam that are very similar to the holes in your shed. I've heard that it is caused by an injury to the growing antler (like be poked by a stick) and the blood vessels that supply blood to the growing antler are disrupted and creates a sort of dead spot in the antler around the injury. The growing bone then starts to grow around the dead spot. On my shed the antler around several of the holes, including the biggest hole, is really dark in colored. One of the hole actually had the tip of a twig in it. I've also read where people who raise deer say that alot of times you can't notice any sort of injury to the antlers while in velvet but when the deer rubs the velvet off the holes are there. I can't believe that it is any type of bug or parsite because alot of the holes are different shapes and sizes. In my area of NY I don't see these types of holes very often. When I do they are usually on the same areas around the middle of the mainbeams and where the tines meet the mainbeam and never seem to be on the tines or anywhere else. If it was a parasite I think that it would be more widespread in the herd and the holes would be all over the antlers.
