CodyCoyote
Well, I havent posted in a while, didnt have the time but now with a foot of snow deer season is out and I have nothing to do. I am looking for a good .22 for squirrels and rabbits. My usual range is no more than 50 yards. I wanted one with the following qualities... Accurate with the right ammo (If I miss I want it to be my fault) Multi Shot ( just in case I dont hit him the first time) Open sights and Scopeable (is that a word?) Able to hold enough shots to get the job done on an afternoon hunt. Shoulder's quickly and nicely Light weight Looks decent Under 250 $ For the accuracy I was thinking Bolt action but it isnt easy to get alot of shots off with it. For ammo holding and quick shots I was thinking Semi Auto. I looked at the lever action guns but I cant find a cheap one. I will accept a diffrent caliber as long as I can get ammo fairly cheap. Any suggestions? Thanks, Cody
Slugger
T/C makes some super accurate .22 rifles for the money but youll have to go a little over your $250 limit if thats an option. Unless you can find one used. The .22classic and Benchmark are great guns.

bluelund79
Ruger 10/22. Very accurate, affordable, and semi. Savage Mark II. Very accurate, great trigger, bolt.
huntinman802
cant go wrong with a ruger 10/22. ther are accurate, light, affordable, costomizeable. and if the 10 rd. clip isnt enough for you, you can buy a 23 rd. banana clip and a 50 rd. drum clip. Ethan Givan
Check out a Marlin 60. The one I have now is extremely accurate. Very impressive for a semi-auto. It holds 13 rounds in the magazine if I remember right. The iron sights are accurate but I had a cheap 3x9 scope on it and you could hit bottle caps at 50 yards all day. They are sweet shooting rifles and they are reasonably priced.
LETMGROW
I have never had a .22 that didn't shoot well at 50 yds. The afformentioned Ruger and Marlin are both good. The Ruger opens itself up to a host of aftermarket options that allow you to " customize " your gun the way you want it. The Marlin is limited to a very few changes. I have both, and really can't tell you which one shoots better. They are both great. Remington makes a good shooter in the 597, Mossberg makes some very accurate .22's and Savage rates right up there with them. I have several .22's and really can't pick out a favorite. I suggest you go to a store and handle as many as you can and decide for yourself which you like best. One thing I would offer is to buy new. Don't chance buying something someone has shot the barrel out of just to save a couple bucks. Lynn

Bought mine for $185. Its a bolt action tube fed with a synthetic stock. Holds 17 lr rounds and 25 shorts. Comes with open sights too. I also bought a model 60 last friday. A guy brought it into work to put it on consignment and it was only on the rack for 5 mins before i decided to buy it. He had only shot about 50 rounds through it, it looked brand new. Took it out saturday and had a blast with it. Was routinely hitting pieces of clay pigeon and little rocks out to 75 yards with it and only open sights. I love this little gun. Its going to get alot of use this year when gophers come out and also for shooting jackrabbits at night.

hunterbobb
I'm not certain what everyone else on here considers acurate but all the rifles I've seen mentioned on here so far are mediocer at best. I don't consider soda can sized groups to be accurate. The gun you want is no longer manufatured but you should be able to find one on Gunbroker or Auction arms. It is a Remington model 581. It is a bolt action with a hard wood stock and a 10 round magazine. I own two of them and at 50 yards will shoot a group you can cover with a dime. I use Wichester ammo and it seems to shoot the best. So if you want to shot soda cans get any of the others. If you want to shot a dime find a remington. If you don't like it I'll but it from you.:gun2:

Was sighting it in so the shots outside of the bull were from adjusting the scope. Shot from around 40-45 yards Thats 13 shots in that one big hole I shot this one with my MARLIN 925 5 shots in the bull from 40-45 yards. the shots on the left side of the target are from different ammo i was trying out. Both targets were shot with Remington yellowjackets. and both groups were shot while i was sitting in my pickup using the side mirror as rest. So shooting off the bench with a proper rest they will shoot better. Just didnt have the time to go to the range so i just drove up the road a little ways to where people shoot. Im not saying Remington didnt make good rifles. But i would have to disagree with you about "all the other rifles mentioned" shooting pop can size groups. Even a 10/22 can shoot better than that off the shelf. If they all shot as bad as you say, they wouldnt still be around.

I sold one of them because I didnt care for the trigger as well but it was still accurate. My brother has easily shot pennies at 50 yards with one. I can shoot soda cans at 100 yards with this gun. No wind, hold about 3 inches high. It will shoot. Edited February 9, 2010 by Ethan Givan
huntinman802
i wouldnt say the ruger 10/22 is a tack driver but the accuracy of one deffinity is not mediocer
Shaun_300
If I get another .22 it'll be a Ruger 10/22! Should have got it when I got my Remington 597, I like the way the 597 shoots, when it shoots! It is a real picky bugger on ammo for cycling. johnf
Ruger 10/22 is probably the most popular 22 semi auto and has tons of after market stuff to make the gun look and perform great. I've got a Marlin 60 and it's a great shooter. It's not as glamorous, but they do shoot great and are a fair bit less than the Ruger. For the price of a Ruger you could get the Marlin and an ok scope for it.
RangerClay
My two favorite .22's are my Ruger 10/22 and my Winchester 94/
dartonman
Ruger 10/22 is a great gun....I actually really like/love my Savage 17hmr with the synthetic stock/scope combo...deadly squirrel and rabbit gun, and I can put them in the size of a dime all day at 75 yards.......here is a website you can do research, and looked at the tricked out (people have way too much time/money) guns...there is a great classified ads, I have done business with alot of em, good people. Its www.rimfirecentral.com it will give you an idea, and there are specific forum rooms for each popular/not so popular gun on their site. al
scottb
I just bought a Savage model 64, and between it and the cheap scope i just got at walmart, i'm into it for under 150.00 total. It shoots real nice and meets everything your looking for.
bbgatech
I bought a Savage93 17HMR. If you can, look at the 17HMR too. I've shot 1" groups with mine at 200 yards on a still day. If you want a .22LR that's cool, but you need to check out the .17HMR as well. There's not alot of price difference. Good luck
jdeere
Hey just I like to see someone use something other than a 12 ga. to kill squirrel.. There's nothing like sitting out there and plinking one in the head at 50 yards or more, and you dont mess up the meat!!! Matt
