Shaun_300
This happened about 10 miles down the Ottawa River from here. Simon, the man who was killed was a good friend of a guy I work with. So sad. He was probably flying and hit a patch of glare ice and lost control, the way the snow conditions are out there right now. http://www.ottawasun.com/news/ottawa/2010/02/09/12810726.html

Newarcher
Sorry to hear that.....I thought that snowmobiles were slow until I found out how fast some of them go. Sweet Moses, no wonder so many people are killed. When you consider how many terrain changes happen under the snow, I would be going very slow on one. Hate it for you and this family. Godspeed. Shaun_300
Sorry to hear that.....I thought that snowmobiles were slow until I found out how fast some of them go. Sweet Moses, no wonder so many people are killed. When you consider how many terrain changes happen under the snow, I would be going very slow on one. Hate it for you and this family. Godspeed. New Some of them will reach speeds of 140mph off the showroom floor. With 160hp under the hood (twice the power of a honda civic) in a 400-500lb chassis, they scoot pretty good. With a few modifications they'll reach 160-170mph on radar. I'd never go that quick, our 2 stroke 600 twin cylinder would go about 105mph flat out, even that was too quick. When the windshield starts folding with the air passing by it, you know you're moving. Clay was saying this guy drove one speed, flat out. And he was a heavy user of drugs and alcohol. Those two don't mix when you're driving a machine that can reach those speeds.
RangerClay
Todays sleds are waaaaay to fast. In the winter, every Monday morning we listen to the news to find out how many snowmobilers died over the weekend. For 3 months, one or more people will die EVERY weekend. LETMGROW
Snowmobiles are no different than cars, boats, motorcycles etc. The operator has the control of speed and common sense. Sure, todays sleds are fast but consider you can buy cars, bikes and boats that will easily top out at over 200 mph. You've got to use some sense yourself or you could get into trouble.
