brudaman340
Im planning on going back to the Adirondacks to hunt black bears this September. I was wondering if anyone here has hunted bear in the Adirondacks. Also, I was wondering what are some good techniques for hunting bear successfully. We can not bait bears in New York either. m gardner
Find food and you'll find the bears. Your biggest problem is getting the animal out before it spoils. The Moose River Recreation Area holds a sizeable population of bears. The stands of black cherries and beeches are your best bet. If you'll travel to hunt from where you live which seems to be the NYC area I'd hunt the Vermont bear corridor instead. The area between Stratton Mountain and Manchester has a good population of bears. Usually still hunting and listening for the noise of them feeding is a good way to hunt. They aren't quiet. Wobbly_Alaska
well i don't k now anything about your areas, but i do know bears rather well... in the spring we bait them and in the fall we stalk them. for the most part we look HIGH in the fall for bear, ( here in AK) they are still above the bug line eating the ripe blue Berry's. we find a vantage and glass the slopes during the day to spot our bear. Aug/ Sept. HERE, is the hurry up and get fat time.. i would guess (?) sept/ Oct down that way would be the optimal time? I took this one last sept while moose hunting (the full story is in my blog) when i bear hunt one thing that is always in my pocket is a rabbit/ hare in distress call... knowing how to call a bear is akin to the kid that never shuts up.... if you go quite they stop coming.. I like to spot one then call him on the run to me even from a tree stand... in the fall bears have one thing on their mind... Whats For Dinner? as they rut in the spring. finding areas they are feeding in is a big deal and in the fall Berry filled scat is a sure sign. and up here it is almost exclusively on a slope above tree line. Wobbly_Alaska
there are a couple of DVD out for calling all bears, a few of them give great advice for locating bear sign and habitat. Black bears like COVER thick heavy cover and will come out to the fields to graze in the evening and mornings when it is cooler. In the fall they are foraging for food, pulling down Berry's, and seeking gut piles from hunter harvest. i would glass clear cuts early and late, stalk logging roads or back trails, looking for tracks and sign, and i would call with a predator call. one thing about bear hunting is it takes a lot of leg work to get them located. they range constantly and are most active in the dark hours. a fawn in distress call would bring a bruin in fast down there... as i also use a moose calf cry to get their attention. good luck sounds like you have a trip planned!!! brudaman340
Yea we went for the first time this year and we still had a good time and its a really cheap trip considering i already have the tag. The campsite is only 20 bucks for 3 days and its only a 2 hour drive there. It also is the biggest bear population area in new york state.
