Guest TennesseeTurkey
Ok here's the story in a nutshell.... we have a New GM (boss of my boss) who has hired a new boss over all of the techs. well to put it nicely the guy is an absolute jerk and is running our office in the ground and he's trying to make me come into work an hour earlier (which is 2 and a half hours away which means Ill have to leave my house at 4 am) can I quit because of a change in company policy that requires too much of my time and sleep deprivation and get unemployment? basically I need out of this job in a bad way but not bad enough not to have any money coming in... The_Kat
Not 100% here, but I don't think your eligible for unemployment if you quit a job. I'm pretty sure you could try, but your employer would most likely dispute it and win. Schedule sucks, but it's a job and in todays market thats a huge thing. As long as the company is paying over time, or giving comp time off their policy change is legal. I know the feeling on sucky schedules. When I am working, I work 16-18 hours a day seven days a week 1000's of miles away from my family for months at a time. I worked 57 days in a row without a day off this summer in Ohio. I'd start looking for a new job and keep the one you have til then.
davetucker
I know the feeling. With this econamy and trying to cut corners in our family buissness us crane operaters when not in our machines have to now be laborers in between!! That has meant triple the work for the same pay! I guess it is the times where you have to suck it up and do what it takes to bring homea pay check and support the family!! Get this.... with things o te rise(hotel rooms, food, fuel) we get not a penny more per-diam and have to most of the time end up paying out of our pocket. Like the kat said keep the old job while looking for new one! It will be hard but a hunter is also a survivalist so i know you can do it. Guest TennesseeTurkey
this change will have me out at 4 am and home anywhere between 5 and 11 which is where I average when I get home..... my problem is this new guy coming in and destroying morale with everybody and taking the my way or the highway attitude and in my personality, that dont fly.... I havent been walked on in my entire life and Im not starting now.... I dont want people thinking that Im just complaining because of leaving earlier my point is is I save our bosses tails time in and time out in my area.... if they want me to continue to do that dont screw me by making me come into work earlier just because you dont like it.... The_Kat
Stand your ground, but just think of your family and their financial well being. I put up with a jerk boss for almost a year when I first started inspecting.
CampWildGirls
I know where we are from people are getting unemployment no matter what they do. I had a gal that stole from me in a previous business and I fired her. I fought unemployment but she still won. Not that everywhere is like that but I am hearing that more and more often. m gardner
When they pulled that crap with me I just came in when I could get there. I was counseled and written up. I finally asked the manager how many warnings I needed before I was let go by the "real boss". He said, "oh let's not let that be our goal". He's gone now. They realized he wasn't making them money by harrassing the workers. Non value added people are expendable right now. We aren't. joeaveragehunter
I would try to hang him out to dry. If he truly is bad for the company, then he won't last. Nothing wrong with speeding up the process.
HUNTINGMAN
It's hard to take crap from anyone but sometimes you have to just to suport the ones that mean the most to you. Maybe you should look for a job a little closer to home,2.5 hours is a long way to travel everyday to go to work.

ruttinbuc
Will, keep the job! Period. I wait at my mailbox, with the phone on, everyday for a response for even an inkling of a job offer. Getting walked on is a fact of life and everybody goes through it at some point. Just ask the millions who will never go back to their job how heavy the boots were. Weigh out the options to keep your family above water. Don't think for a minute that an unemployment check is the answer for now.
wtnhunt
Don't know about where you are at, but directv was hiring installers in this area Will. You may want to check your area. They pay differently though, I believe, or at least they did last time I talked with a buddy of mine who used to install for me. One pays by the install and the other pays hourly, thinking direct is by the install. May be worth checking into though.
Guest TennesseeTurkey
Im getting paid by the install now, most sub contractors are paid by the install.... Im keeping my job as long as I can but if things get too bad Ill have to have some way out...
Adjam5
They may be able to make you eat crap Will, but they can't make you like it. Keep looking for a better job, but until then. Suck it up a bit. Jobs are hard to come by now a days.
