ruttinbuc
More than a few times now our good friend Anthony (Adjam5) has invited me up to his hunting ground. Seeing that he was going to be up there to participate in an ice fishing derby I got directions to his getaway and headed up Saturday morning. After a hearty welcome we went for a walk to check out his traps and look over the hunting land a bit. A short while later we loaded up his 4 wheeler, trailer and Texas outdoor grill in our pick ups. We then took the scenic route to the lake. His place is in a beautiful part of the Catskills. We signed in for the derby after unloading the trucks and headed out for a whole lot of fun on the ice. It wasn't the best day for the fishing, but the camaraderie of the townspeople of Hurlyville, NY was a treat in itself. I certainly had a good time and made some new friends. A great bunch of people. I think the whole town participated as everywhere you looked there were tents, ice shacks, smoking grills and tip ups. Various modes of transportation where also in use. I didn't suffer from a lack of food either. Anthony brought some axis burgers as well as Stone Cold's back straps wrapped in bacon recipe! Wow! It seemed that everyone had there own venison recipe's and marinades. At 2pm everyone packed it up and headed to the ceremony to see who would lay claim to the biggest fish. They had a 50/50 and some nice raffle prizes. What impressed me most was the way the town honored the kids whether they caught fish or not. All of them got prizes with a a separate raffle. Not only did they have 3 place prizes for different categories, but honorable mention as well! Some very nice prizes along with the trophies to boot! We didn't hang around for the adult winners since we were a little tired and wanted to get the equipment loaded and back to the house. Once back, Anthony took me on what he called the "fifty cent tour" of his hunting ground and the big mountain beyond. In its hay day it was a big ski resort and golf course which is known as the Jewish Alps. Needless to say I was quite impressed as we four wheeled up to the almost 1700' peak. It was quite the tour to say the least. The woods were super beautiful with the snow on the ground and the views from the top were spectacular. I wished it was a better picture taking day. We then cleaned up and headed to the Hurlyville firehouse for dinner. What a spread that was! Wow! All of this including hot dogs, soda and coffee at the lake was included in the entry fee of $5. Needing a big nap we went back and watched a couple video and hit the sack before nine. Probably the best sleep I had in awhile. I woke up to the smell of bacon and sat down to a wonderful breakfast prepared by my host. We talked for a bit and then it was time to head home. Another memory I won't soon forget with a member of the Realtree forums. I owe you Anthony!

Adjam5
Great stuff there Mike. That looked like a lot of work putting that together. It was a pleasure hosting you at my slice of heaven on earth. During the spring and fall, the views are incredible on the Columbia. That hotel was rocking and rolling back in the day when the Catskills was THE happening place to vacation. Luckily all that land backs up to our land;). We use it like it is ours. My friends enjoyed meeting you also and were happy that you came out and supported the FD and the youth commission . I told a few guys you were a photog for Field n Stream when they asked who you were:D. That has been a annual thing for me for the last 15 or so years. Yes the Stone Cold Bacon wrapped venison bits were a BIG hit! The town Judge even gave the thumbs up on them. Sorry I was short on grits for breakfast, but we did have the slab bacon with eggs and biscuits. When better weather comes around, come on back up, or out however way you want to come. Just come back . Thanks for coming Mike.

Amazing what a 2 1/2 hour ride can make in the scheme of it all. The little town atmosphere was something to behold and I really appreciated the fact that those folks treated me like one of their own. That is missing around here anymore. Pretty funny to tell those guys I was with Field and Stream:D As for making the video it did take a little time and effort. The program I have helps. I really appreciate and like to thank all who took the time to watch and comment on it. I know they can be long, but some stories are longer than others. At least there is a point to it with an experience to share with all... I certainly plan to revisit in the spring or fall. I can just imagine those views from the top of Columbia at those times of year! :camera: Thanks again my friend!
