Your first Turkey

My first turkey was taken in 1998...I think lol.. Anyways, my dad and stopped by a christmas tree farm that we had permission to hunt. We got one to gobble from behind the property in a tall pine plantation. We went down one of the machine trails and set up a decoy about 60yds from the property line.

With a few minutes of calling and him answering, he was right in front of me 10 yards away.....strutting away. But I couldnt shoot...being rookie turkey hunters I didnt pay attention to which way the decoy was facing. The tom was strutting in front of the hen decoy, which placed him directly behind a 3 foot christmas tree.

Eventually I was able to lean around the tree and make a shot on him. He was 19lbs and had a 9.5'' beard, but no spurs just little nubs. Ive had a LOT of great hunts on that tree farm!! Not always successful...but fun!

My first was a Hen. NC has a one week winter season in the mountain counties where either sex is permitted (only bearded birds are legal in our Spring Season). I will always remember it not only because it was my first bird, but because I got to share the experience with my Dad. Hunting them in the Winter is tough, because they aren't vocal and don't respond to calls. You basically have to stalk/ambush them. We hunted up and down the mountain all day with no success, so decided to sit in this old junk school bus on the property we hunted along a large field where we had seem some birds the previous afternoon. They came back in (all Hens) and walked straight towards the bus. Dad counted to 3 and we both shot, killing two of them. I may have a picture somewhere that I can scan later.
