Kyfoster11
I was wondering if someone could help we with a weight rod and length I should start with? I will be fishing for panfish and small bass mainly, but need something to land the occasional 2 or 3 pounder. Any combo choice ideas for under $100 would be great. thanks for any help kent
Turkeygirl
Can't go wrong with Cabela's...I have two rods from them....and reels. They make decent rods and reels on the lower $ side. I'm somewhat a beginner still, lol. My suggestion, for what you'll be fishing, would be a 5 or 6wt...probably in the 7 - 8 foot range. I just got a 7wt, 9 foot rod for steelhead. I also have a 5 wt that is I think like a 7 ' 6" length that I use for trout and panfish. Cabela's has a couple combos for under $100 I believe. There's a few other guys on here that should give ya some good advice as well!
LifeNRA
Try this one. I have it, for a starting outfit it works great! Just on Saturday I landed a 20 inch carp with it! LOL! I foul hooked it, none the less it handled the load quite well! Its the five weight, four piece, 8.5 foot. But if your seriously getting into bass only I would not get just a five weight. I would something in the 7 or 8 weight. But then that will be too heavy for panfish or trout. http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/links/link.jsp?id=0051114320440a&type=product&cmCat=SEARCH_all&returnPage=search-results1.jsp&Ntk=Products&QueryText=three+forks+combo&sort=all&N=0&Nty=1&hasJS=true&_dyncharset=ISO-8859-1&_DARGS=%2Fcabelas%2Fen%2Fcommon%2Fsearch%2Fsearch-box.jsp.form23 Edited February 22, 2010 by LifeNRA
Kyfoster11
So a 5 or 6 wt. about 7.5 to 8 ft. would be fine for what I need? thanks for the help kent
Turkeygirl
I think so. I battled some steelhead last weight on my 5wt....I got a couple in...tricky though! I'd say go with a 6wt....nice inbetween weight. I'd say go with a Cabela's...check their Bargain Cave...I picked up my 7wt rod and reel combo for $60. muggs
I'd get a 4 weight rod. Personally, I like to have a little bit lighter rod so I can play fish on it. Even with a 4 weight, you're not going to be able to feel any panfish. If you get up over 6, you're going to be way heavy and you'll be able to horse fish in. LifeNRA
Its too hard to have just one rod to cover all bases, sure you can do it. But after having this 5 weight, now I want something lighter, like a three weight maybe. But I know if I was hard core bass fishing with a fly rod, it would be a 7 or 8. I used an 8 weight years ago, strictly for bass.
flyrod64
I've never used my flyrod for bass but I have a Fenwick 5 wt I use trout fishing. I have landed some pretty nice trout with it and I have also had fun at some bluegill ponds.
MichiganHunter
if your going to mainly gill fish and only once and a wile pick up small bass like 12" and under I would stick to the lighter side of rods....makes the fight more fun....say 5 weight...I have a few, 4 weight for my gill fishing 5 weight what I started out with and a new 8 weight I bought last year and used to catch pike in canada.
