hunterbobb Posted March 9, 2010 Report Share Posted March 9, 2010 I've shot too many jakes already. So it's a long beard or nothing for me. Three years ago I shot a dandy gobbler with a 10.5" beard. The best part is just being out there, seeing the sun rise and still being alive. Hearing them fly down and hearing a gobble. Hopefully close. It is a very high probability that every longbeard I've killed on those places were jakes I had passed on at least once. We haven't shot jakes on these places for over 10 years. I've seen first hand it make an enormous difference in the number of quality gobblers in the first couple of years. The longer you do it the more incredible the hunting gets. For us, if the beard ain't swinging no shot is slinging! I understand not everybody has the opportunity to manage the birds like that but if you do, I highly recommend it.
