Wobbly_Alaska
So what are your guys feeling on the point systems used in many states? here in AK it is a random draw across the board but the state has considered a point system for a couple of the more popular hunts like our Delta bison that has up to 20,000 applicants from around the world for less then 200 tags. we get a lot of new residents that encourage it and many that hate the idea of it. as once the point system is in place. it would mean maybe decades of waiting where as every year a person has a chance. texastrophies
Hope you don't mind, but I moved your question to it's own thread. This way it should get better participation.
texastrophies
The states that I apply in have many various forms of point systems. Colorado - for the most part - is he who has the most points, gets the tag. This is good, because for the most part you know ahead of time if you have a good chance of drawing or not. Arizona, Utah & Wyoming - all have a system where a portion of the tags go to the top points holders and then the remainder go in a random draw. That way everybody, even someone with no points, has a chance of drawing. Nevada - has a unique system where your points are squared + 1 each year. In other words if you have 5 points, when you apply they will square your points to give you 25 + the application gives you 26 chances to draw. New Mexico has no points system. Everybody has the same chance of drawing each year. Each system has pros & cons. In Colorado you know that if you live long enough you will eventually draw, whereas in NM you may never draw. Once you kind of figure out the systems and have a few years of building points in all of the states, there is no reason why you shouldn't be able to do at least one or two hunts per year. joeaveragehunter
I don't like a straight point system. Even if 20 out of 200 went to a straight chance lottery, it would be so much better. There are some places in oregon that take 22-25 years to get a tag. There are only 10 tags for the entire unit, but it would be much better if one of those went into a drawing for anybody. IMO.
