TN Bucknasty
Question: Who was the first person to start calling a big buck a toad, and what in the heck is that supposed to mean? Pig, hog, sad daddy, mule, monster, rocking chair head, freak, horny devil, cod dragger, wall hanger, walking hat rack, etc. are all terms that I can understand, but "toad"? Really? Like the little frogs that pee all over you?
joeaveragehunter
I thought about this for a minute or two and can only offer you this, which is probably not what the originator intended. One would be a reference to how a toad is bigger than a frog as a big buck is bigger than a regular deer? (No, that is stupid) Two would be how some bucks have racks with bumps and tiny kickers and irregularities in the rack just as a toad has "warts" and bumps and irregularities on their body. Just a shot in the dark. I think this is a question for Michael Wadell. I heard him sling that term around a time or two.
layin on the smackdown
Honestly, i use the word "toad" in reference to a big buck, but more frequently use it to describe a giant thunder chicken....I think the originator may have been using it as a comparison to anything big and ugly, because toads are big, ugly and massive for thier size... Lets see what the dictionary says... toad    /toʊd/ Show Spelled[tohd] Show IPA –noun 1. any of various tailless amphibians that are close relatives of the frogs in the order Anura and that typically have dry, wartyskin and are terrestrial or semiterrestrial in habit.Compare frog1 (def. 1). 2. Also called true toad. a toad of the widespread and chiefly terrestrial family Bufonidae, having relatively short hind legs used in hopping and oftenhaving at the shoulders swellings containing glands that, along with the skin, secrete an irritating fluid in defense.Compare frog1 (def. 2). 3. any of various toadlike animals, as certain lizards. 4. a person or thing as an object of disgust or aversion. I think definition #4 may be the answer to your question.
