Turkeygirl
OMG..... Been doing orientation....had 8 hours on Weds. Thurs and Fri. 12 hour shifts on the med care unit...7am-7pm....I get this weekend off, praise the Lord! I've gotten 7 hours of sleep between 7am Thurs. AM and as of present...My body and head feel detached, lol Also slightly PO'd...they are not organized at all with the orientation...Also found out one nurse manager was told I was not working urgent care, I was hired for the med care unit...UMM The HR person who called me with the job offer specifically said per diem in the urgent care. So I'm not sure what is going on...I understand if they want me on the med care unit to get up to date on my med surg skills...but i'm also not sure if they are trying to pull a fast one and keep me on the med/rehab unit....which only has 12 hour shifts...urgent care, which is what I want and applied for and was offered, is 8 hour. Let me tell you, with a patient census of 8 people and 12 hours....there is almost NOTHING to do, especially as an orientee.... Anyway I'm dead tired. Wanted to check in before I go crash. Should be on alot tomorrow, lol

Turkeygirl
Well seeing that 38 views and 1 reply later, which is mine, no one found this as interesting...bet it'd change if it was a post about hurting myself...:-p
stcif
I say give it some time. Too early to tell what they are doing to ya. Urgent care unit? Is that more busy? Is that why you want to work that unit?

It's going to take you a while to get used to not sleeping in. It's been really slow in the forums lately.

The truth of the matter of the replies vs the views is that they most always run 10% or. Unless the thread is about something really stupid, pointless, or immature it won't get much higher than that...
Muff
Ruth I think if you ever worked 12 hour shift you would love them.....I have worked them now for 15 years and would never go back to 8's or days......you will find that you have so much more time off with the 12 hour shift. The_Kat
I think you should be more positive about your new job. Your the new kid on the block and have to start somewhere. You can't just get what ya want immediately....it's called paying your dues. I agree 12-16 hour shifts are much nicer than 8 hours if ya get 3 days off. Give it time, your body will adjust! DottyHuntress02
That's for sure.. Just be sure you don't stay up too late the night before you go to work... (I should talk, yup, I do that).. But I'm sure you don't. I'm looking for a job. I got an email from a local hospital. I accidentally (didn't look at the work schedule) applied for a position in the evening shift in the ECC (Emergency Care Unit) as a Unit Secretary and just recently received an email to call to make an appointment for an interview. I did, but it was Friday afternoon so I'm going to call again Monday. Anyway.. like the others said, you'll get used to it. But everyone has his or her own way of adjusting. I know what mine will be ... "Not to stay up too late on the computer"... that is if I get the job. - But I'm not going to expect it, but I'll try hard to do good in the interview. I do have to start somewhere, just like you. Maybe it wasn't an accident.. maybe it was meant to be. Take care!
mathews4life
Welcome to the wonderful world of nursing! It's not all its cracked up to be. Yea the money is good but once you become one you know why there is a shortage. I'll b honest. Prepare to b totally disrespected on a daily basis and b prepared to take the blame! It's always the nurses fault!!! I've been a nurse for almost 3 yrs now and I must say its rough! I've said that its probably one of the most disrespected fields ever! Sorry to vent just warning ya. The thing that will keep your head up will b the people you help and appreciate what your doing!! You can do ten thousand good things and they will go un-noticed, but if you do one bad thing it will have a spot light on it!!!
dartonman
Ruth, as you know, my wife is an RN/ER Nursing supervisor.......I wouldn't want to do her job....critical care usually all night, as she is on nights till April, but some of the cases that come through the door really put a new look at "freaks of society unite"....some people do things to their own body for pleasure that a family website can't even imagine....you'll do fine in whatever you decide....those 5 hour energy drinks do work...coming from a guy on midnights....take care kiddo. al
Turkeygirl
Thanks all....Yeah, I go to bed at a reasonable time, I like my sleep and 5 am comes to early...Everyone seems to be fairly nice but who knows when that could change, someone can turn on you at an instant, and being new, I'm sure anything that happens, they'll throw it at the new nurse...Not too mention I have no idea how the Drs. are... I hate the feeling of "not knowing anything" and I wouldn't exactly say they are doing a great job of showing me the routine on the floor. I guess all I can do is be open to learning, learn, not rush...pray alot, lol!
